FC Bayern Women extended their winning run in the Flyeralarm Women’s Bundesliga to 15 games with a 1-0 victory at home to Hoffenheim on Friday night. Lea Schüller got the only goal in front of the sell-out crowd of 2,500 at the FC Bayern Campus after 26 minutes. Three points against the team sitting in fourth sees Alexander Straus and his team extend their advantage at the top to four, at least overnight, with Wolfsburg in second going to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

Lina Magull led Bayern out as captain against Hoffenheim.

Lohmann comes in

Straus made a single change to the team that started last weekend’s 2-1 win away at Essen as Sydney Lohmann replaced the suspended Saki Kumagai. Bayern were also without long-term injury absentees Linda Dallmann (ankle), Giulia Gwinn (cruciate ligament) and Franziska Kett (shoulder), as well as Tainara with a muscular issue.

Schüller’s first-half strike

The hosts started the game well and put Hoffenheim under early pressure, but initially failed to test visiting goalkeeper Martina Tufekovic. A little over midway through the first half, Schüller had a go from a good 20 yards, with Tufekovic pushing the ball behind. The FCB striker then rose highest at the ensuing corner from Klara Bühl to head in the opening goal. Die Frauen continued to set the pace after that and created a few chances, like when Carolin Simon’s cross from the left found Lohmann, who failed to connect properly with the opportunity to double the advantage ahead of half-time.

Controlled second half

The pattern of play was similar after the restart as Bayern continued to create chances. Former Hoffenheim defender Maximiliane Rall fired just wide of the far post in the 53rd minute. Shortly after, Lohmann delivered a teasing cross that Schüller only narrowly missed. Tufekovic then made a stop from Bühl after she’d worked her way past a number of defenders. Despite the dominance, Bayern’s inability to take their chances meant the game remained tense until the end, but Die Frauen saw out the result to claim their 18th win of the Bundesliga campaign.

Leverkusen and Potsdam left

There are only two games left in this season for Bayern as they look to get over the line and claim the title. Next up is a trip to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, 20 May, before they host Turbine Potsdam at the Campus on the final day of the campaign on Sunday, 28 May.
