“We’re happy about the result, second place in the group and how the year’s ended,” said Georgia Stanway in summary after FC Bayern Women’s 2-0 win at home to Benfica in the final group game of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. “I’m very proud of the girls and their development. They can enjoy Christmas now,“ added head coach Alexander Straus.
Reaction to the Benfica game
Alexander Straus: “The girls did an outstanding job today. It wasn’t easy because we knew we’d already qualified for the quarter-finals and Barcelona would probably win. We weren’t great today but we were good. It was just important that we did our job, and we did that. I’m very proud of the girls and their development. They can enjoy Christmas now.”
Klara Bühl: “We’re really happy about the three points. The last few weeks were obviously really intense, but we enjoyed every single game. The matches at the Allianz Arena and Camp Nou were especially great. I’m glad I could give the team some calm with the opening goal. We needed that because it was a tough game.”
Georgia Stanway: “We’re happy about the result, second place in the group and how the year’s ended. We’re now off for Christmas and can recover a bit again. If someone had said before the season that we’d already be into the quarter-finals with a game to spare, I would’ve taken that straight away. We had no pressure today and could just enjoy it.”
Sydney Lohmann: “We got the win and didn’t concede a goal – that’s what counts. It was obviously a very tough game. The first half especially wasn’t that good. We weren’t tidy enough, lost the ball too often. It was better in the second half. Now we’re off for the winter break, which we’ve earnt. We want to build on the performances of recent weeks again in the new year.”
