FC Bayern Munich face a big test in their first competitive match of the new season as they take on last year's league and cup runners-up, Borussia Dortmund, in the annual DFL Supercup. Although Dortmund won this encounter last year, Bayern went on to win the domestic double in emphatic fashion, and both sides are eager to add more silverware in the coming season. Viewers in the US will be able to watch the much-anticipated game Wednesday, August 13 on GolTV at 12:00pm EST.
Despite the preparatory nature of the game, each team will be eager to not only claim the first trophy of the new season but get a win over their rival in front of over 80,000 spectators at the Signal Iduna Park and millions watching around the world. "A final is no pre-season friendly - you play these games to win," said head coach Pep Guardiola. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer very much echoed Guardiola's sentiments, making clear that this is no ordinary warm-up match for them, "we're up against our biggest rivals in Germany. We'll be taking the first competitive match very seriously and we're determined to win."
Adjustments for both sides
Both teams will have to deal with the absences of several key players. Guardiola will be without the injured Franck Ribery and Rafinha as well as new signing Pepe Reina who has just had two training sessions under his belt with his new team. World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger is also likely to miss out due to injury. Guardiola's opposite, Jürgen Klopp, meanwhile will have to do without newly-appointed captain Mats Hummels, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Marco Reus and Nuri Sahin, saying that the game will likely be won by the team "who can best fix their problems and forget about them for 90 or 120 minutes."
Viewers in the US can also catch replays of the Supercup on GolTV at 5:00pm and 11:00pm EST respectively.
