Bayern earn point against champions Wolfsburg

In a very tactical and hard-contested match, FC Bayern earned a valuable point on the road against German and European champions VfL Wolfsburg. The 0:0 draw brings Bayern up to third in the standings and continues their unbeaten start to the season. Swiss striker Vanessa Bürki also made her 150th appearance for Bayern in the midweek fixture.

Gina Lewandowski, Amber Brooks and Katie Stengel all started for Bayern in Wolfsburg as the team face its biggest challenge to date this season. Bayern started with more energy and more of the ball. They created the better chances early on through Stengel (5.), Melanie Leupolz (7.) and Stengel again (31.) but alas without putting the ball in the net. Wolfsburg got into the match late in the first half and had two shots of their own but for the most part, both teams' good defending canceled each other out.

Much of the same was the case in the second half as the teams worked hard to recover balls after losing them and left little room on the counter attack. The best chance fell to Bayern striker Caroline Abbes on the hour mark after her header scraped the post. Abbe again came close at the end after a free kick from captain Melanie Behringer but it was not to be and both sides had to split the points in the end. "It was a good game overall. We didn't allow Wolfsburg to get into the game and had the better chances. It was a great effort from the team," said coach Thomas Wörle.

Bayern are now four points behind league-leaders Turbine Potsdam who have yet to drop a point this season. Wolfsburg is in second. Next up for Bayern is a second-round match in the German Cup (DFB Cup) against TSV Schott Mainz. That is followed up by their next league match on Thursday, October 2 at Bayer Leverkusen.
