World Cup runner-up Stimac arrives in Munich

Defending Champions FC Bayern Basketball start their title defence against Mitteldeutschen BC in just over two weeks (2nd October) and can now train as a full squad for the first time: Two days after taking part in the World Cup Final against the USA, Serbian Centre Vladimir Stimac, a summer signing, arrived in Munich. After arriving in the Audi Dome he was introduced to CEO Marko Pesic, Head Coach Svetislav Pesic and his teammates, all of whom congratulated him on his success with the Serbian national team.

“They were all nice to me. Good morale in the team is really important to me” explained the silver medal winner in his first press conference. “I’m honoured to play for such a big club. I spoke to a lot of players whilst I was away at the World Cup and they all believe that Bayern are one of the best teams in Europe.”

The 27-year-old flew to Munich straight after the culmination of celebrations in the Serbian capital Belgrade. On Monday evening the team celebrated in front of the Parliament building with 150,000 supporters. “It was one of the most thrilling and exciting experiences of my life” explained Stimac, who scored seven points in the 129-92 defeat to America in the final. “It’s impossible to walk around the city without someone coming to congratulate you or ask for a photo.”  Despite his summer exertions, Stimac is ready to hit the ground running with FCBB: “I didn’t play as many minutes in the World Cup as some of the others and even if I had there’s no time to relax anyway – I’m ready and can’t wait to take to the court for Bayern.”

The first training session to include the whole Bayern squad will take place on Wednesday evening. Before this, Stimac needs to take the obligatory medical tests. Stimac had this to say when asked about his reunion with Svetislav Pesic: “He’s the main reason I chose to come here.” Pesic worked with the 2.10m athlete between 2008 and 2009 when both were at Red Star Belgrade. “Since then he has been like a father to me. He doesn’t just make you a better player, but also a better person as he places great emphasis on how to look after your body.”
