Strong second half earns Bayern the win

FC Bayern Basketball defeated the FRAPORT SKYLINERS 80-73 for their third consecutive win to start the Beko BBL season. The Audi Dome audience of 5,311 were forced to watch a disappointing first half but were brought back to life during a brilliant comeback in the third quarter and the team confidently earned the victory. Nihad Djedovic confirmed he is back to his solid form, leading the team with 20 points. John Bryant returned from missing the last game due to illness with another convincing double-double performance (12 points and 10 rebounds).

Scoring by quarter (FCBB - FRAP): 18-24, 16-24, 25-7, 21-18

FC Bayern team:  Nihad Djedovic (20 points / 4 three-pointers), Dusko Savanovic (18 / 2 three-pointers), John Bryant (12 / 10 rebounds), Robin Benzing (9 / 2 three-pointers), Vladimir Stimac (8), Lucca Staiger (6 / 1 three-pointer), Vasilije Micic (4), Heiko Schaffartzik (3 / 10 assists), and Jan Jagla; DNP: Yassin Idbihi and Daniel Mayr.

Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FC Bayern Basketball: "Frankfurt played excellent, you have to respect that.  We trusted our defense would exert a little pressure to the system that Frankfurt runs and we would find our rhythm. But that did not work out. Frankurt played with discipline and moved the ball well. At halftime they already had ten three-pointers. We are missing the freshness on our team due to our health problems.  However we understand that only we can help ourselves."

Gordon Herbert, Head Coach, FRAPORT SKYLINERS: "I thought we played an outstanding first half, and (Bayern) played an even better second half. I thought the first three to four minutes of the third quarter, they got a lot of momentum and they made shots and we started playing to much one-on-one on the offensive end. They are very good defensively. I think we got away from our team game in the first half. We just had too many turnovers in the second half. (Bayern) came out and shot the ball really well and moved the ball really well. Coach Pesic's teams are hard to play against, they are Euroleague level."

Dusko Savanovic, Power Forward, FC Bayern Basketball: "We recently have had troubles at the beginning of games, probably we are pressing ourselves, everybody wants to do more than they are supposed to do. Somehow during the game, we find the rhythm and get to the level that we want to be. Frankfurt is a very serious, well-organized and disciplined team that know how to punish every situation and they showed that and gave us problems. (At halftime) Coach gave some ideas and where to look and it worked and we came back."

1st quarter:
FCBB Head Coach Svetislav Pesic once again could not use his full roster as injured Anton Gavel, captain Bryce Taylor and Paul Zipser were not available. Vasilije Micic, Nihad Djedovic, Robin Benzing, Dusko Savanovic and John Bryant were selected as the starting five. Similar to their home-opener against MBC, Munich started behind, this time 3-0 after a quick three-pointer. Bryant would score a minute later to start an 8-0 run for the home team (8-3 after 4 minutes). The defense for the Reds was awake and aggressive and made shot attempts difficult for the SKYLINERS. Savanovic and Bryant combined for all the points as Bayern led 12-7 in the sixth minute, and Lucca Staiger added a dynamic layup for a 14-9 lead. The guest then relied on their long-distance ability, and in their view, that was not a bad decision, because after their third consecutive three-pointer, they were suddenly in the lead 18-16 late in the quarter. Munich were unable to convert their chances, Frankfurt added two more from beyond the arc to lead 24-18 after the first quarter.

2nd quarter:
The German league champions needed close to two minutes in the second quarter to get their first basket by Djedovic to get within 26-20. Many times the fans felt that their team would get back in the game, but the Bayern engine kept sputtering. On offense the shots were not falling, and the defense tried everything to protect against the three-point shot. Two minutes before halftime, Munich trailed 43-32 and the lead would extend to 14 points by the end of the second quarter - 48-34. The SKYLINERS connected on 10 three-pointers from 20 attempts, while Munich attempted only 10 themselves, only making one. From Bayern's view, the game could only get better.

3rd quarter:
And it did get better. The Reds came out of the locker room with bite. Benzing illustrated this with a three-point-play. After a bucket from Djedovic to cut the deficit down to 48-39 (22nd minute), Frankfurt Head Coach Gordon Herbert called timeout. Bayern continued to surge on the court, a 14-0 run after the first four minutes of the second half evened the game at 48 apiece. The fans were estatic that FCBB found their rhythm from long distance, including Savanovic's three-pointer that gave Bayern their first lead since the first quarter (54-51 after 27 minutes). The third quarter belonged to the German champs, outscoring Frankfurt 25-7 and taking a 59-55 lead into the final ten minutes.

4th quarter:
Munich needed some time again for their first basket, Staiger rewarded the fans with his only three-pointer of the game to extend the lead to 62-58 (33rd minute). The Audi Dome hosts defended their turf agressively and the ball moved quickly to the front. Halfway through the quarter, Savanovic finished with an exclamatory dunk to bring the crowd to their feet and the lead for Bayern to double-digits at 68-58. In the hectic final minutes, the courageous visitors continued to battle, cutting the Bayern lead down to 73-67. However a clinching three-pointer by Djedovic made it clear that Bayern were on their way to their third win of the season. Final: 80-73.
