Bayern sign American Bo McCalebb

FC Bayern Basketball have signed Bo McCalebb in order to lessen the impact the current injury crisis has on the roster. The German Champions have signed the American on an initial one month deal, after which both parties will evaluate the situation before deciding what to do next. The 29-year-old Point Guard played for Fenerbahce Istanbul, one of Bayern’s opponents in this year’s Euroleague, last season, in which he helped guide them to the Turkish Championship.

The offensively strong playmaker could make his debut for Svetislav Pesic’s side on Thursday evening (20:15 CET) in the Euroleague against FC Barcelona. His registration has been confirmed, meaning he is also able to play in the Bundesliga from now on.

“FC Bayern were the best choice for me and I’m ready to play”, said McCalebb after putting pen to paper on his deal. “I like to play the game at a high tempo; I bring athleticism with me – I like to cover every inch of the court during a game – but I can also defend. I hope to bring these skills to the court with me for Bayern and help the team.”

After the finer details of the contract were ironed out, a delighted FCBB CEO Marko Pesic couldn’t hide his pleasure at confirming the deal: “As a result of injuries we decided to bring someone in. It allows our injured players – Bryce Taylor Anton Gavel and Paul Zipser – the chance to recover at their own pace and have the chance to return their old form without too much pressure. Bo was on the market and received our initial contact positively, which made it easier for us to confirm his signing. We are proud that a player of his quality has decided to sign for us.”

Lester “Bo” McCalebb developed into one of the best Point Guards in Europe last season. The talented dribbler and shooter began his career at the University of New Orleans, where he played for the Privateers. Throughout his five years at his home town’s university he averaged 20.9 points per game. He signed his first professional contract in 2008, for Turkish side Mersin, where he averaged 17.4 points per game and racked up the highest amount of steals in the league (2.7 per game).

The 1.83m athlete joined Serbian club Partizan Belgrade in summer 2009: His point scoring ability and all round play led to Partizan winning the Serbian Championship, Serbian Cup and the Adria League. McCalebb also helped his side reach the Final Four of the Euroleague that season (13.4 points and 3.4 assists per game).

These performances caught the eye of Italian side Montepaschi Siena, who recruited him ahead of the 2010/11 season. His first season in Italy was hugely successful: McCalebb was part of a side that won the domestic treble (Championship, Cup, Supercup). In his second year in Serie A he was voted the league’s “Most Valuable Player” (MVP). He was also the topscorer in the Euroleague (16.9 points per game) with a 61% shooting accuracy (53% from outside the arc). In 2011 and 2012 he was voted MVP for the Finals series in Italy.

McCalebb played for Fenerbahce Istanbul for the past two seasons. In 2013 he won the Turkish Cup and last season saw him lift the Championship (10.5 points and 3.4 assists per game).

Since 2010 McCalebb has represented the Macedonian national team. He starred in the 2011 European Championship in Lithuania. He guided his country to a stunning win against the hosts in the quarter-final and was sensational in the semi against Spain, which the Iberians won 90-82 in the end. McCalebb ended the tournament with 21.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. These figures made him the second highest scorer in the Championship – only France’s NBA star Tony Parker scored more points.
