Spanish Champions visit the Dome

Bayern will "give their all" against Barça

FC Bayern Basketball head into the exciting game against FC Barcelona knowing that they will need to be full of energy to stand a chance of springing a surprise. The Spanish Champions and Euroleague title challengers visit the sold-out Audi Dome this Thursday (20:15 CET). Ahead of the game Svetislav Pesic declared that the visitors are: “In very good form at the moment. But, we’ll do everything in our power and give our all in the hope of winning the game.”

The team of stars from Catalonia head into the game as favourites. The team, which includes Spanish hero Juan Carlo Navarro in their ranks, head into the game with Bayern with a perfect record in Group C, including a stunning victory over Greek Champions Panathinaikos (78-69). Xavi Pascual’s side lie in second place in the Spanish league, arguably the strongest in Europe, with a 6-1 record. Only Real Madrid (7-0) are in a stronger position. At the weekend they beat Valencia, Spain’s third participant in the Euroleague, 76-57. Their top-scorer to date is US-Forward Justin Doellman who is averaging 12.8 points per game; Navarro is a close second with 11.7. Play-maker Marcelinho Huertas averages 4.4 assists per game. Czech Guard Tomas Satoransky returns to the squad, having missed the narrow home victory over Bayern (83-81) with injury.

“Barcelona are without a doubt one of the best teams in Europe,” said Bayern-Center John Bryant ahead of the game, which is the high point of the season so far for FCBB. “We aren’t heading into the game as favourites and we also need to contend with injuries – but of course, as we know, anything could happen on the night. We have a chance, but it is going to be far from easy for us. However, I am sure that in the first game Barcelona realised that we are a strong team; one which can keep up with them.”

Bayern have picked up one victory from five Euroleague games so far this came. “We still have a chance to qualify, but it’s a slim one,” explained Coach Pesic when asked about qualification for the next round. “We would have had a stronger chance of reaching the Top16 if we had picked up a few more points by now.” Pesic feels that an electric atmosphere in the Audi Dome will be critical if Bayern want to stand a chance of upsetting the visitors: “The support of the fans is incredibly important. The incredible support we receive from the fans means a lot to us and we need them to remain as passionate. It really motivates the boys. Barcelona play technically good basketball, move the ball quickly and are powerful – we will need the fans to be patient at times but always be behind us.”
