NSCAA Convention

Breitner on Bayern philosophy and growing US soccer

Philadelphia was the epicenter of all things US soccer this week as the annual National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention rolled into town. The Major League Soccer Super Draft took center stage but the five-day long event had everything from clinics to panel discussions - among them FC Bayern legend and club ambassador Paul Breitner who spoke at length about the Bayern philosophy, player development and growing soccer in the US.

Characteristically to the point, Breitner stressed the most important aspect of youth development right from the start, "The most dominating person at FC Bayern is the ball." That is the guiding principle at the FC Bayern youth academy said Breitner. Training and development is designed around using the ball so as to teach and improve technical skills from an early age.

Breitner also commented on the growth and development of US soccer over the years and provided some advice to American coaches. "Go out, and learn, visit other soccer nations." The experience of learning abroad could be very valuable for growing the game domestically according to Breitner who urged coaches to avoid hearing "the same instructions, the same ideas, the same speech about tactics. Go out live, learn, come back and you will get results, better results."

The former Bayern and Germany player also discussed the significant changes in German soccer since the 1998 World Cup and the influence of past coaches like Louis Van Gaal and Jupp Heynckes at Bayern. Check out more comments from his panel discussion here
