In 2013, FC Bayern Munich found a home in the City by the Bay at Mia San Francisco. Since then, the fan club has grown to over 270 members.
In the third installment of the fan club profiles, Mia San Francisco co-founder Jason Lockhart discusses his experiences from recently becoming a fan to the fan club’s extensive social activities. To learn more about Mia San Francisco, visit it on social media and at its home pub Danny Coyle's.
How did you become an FC Bayern fan and what made you start a fan club?
A friend of mine from Germany is a lifelong Bayern fan and introduced me to the team during the 2010-11 season – by the time the 2011-12 season rolled around, I was hooked. It was during the spring of 2012 that a perfect storm of Bayern fandom occurred. Founding members Fabian Namgalies, Thomas Stahn and myself met by chance at a bar for the Bayern-Barcelona Champions League Semifinal in May of 2013 and immediately discussed forming an official club with the idea of organizing the many Bayern fans in the area.
How would you describe the fan club’s growth?
Our members have done an admirable job growing our membership. We had only 70 Facebook members in February 2013 and by September we hit 1,000. We’ve been able to up our membership by creating a Yelp page, passing out business cards, posting on such sites as Meetup and by having our Bayern bar (Danny Coyle’s) promote our viewings on their website. It’s been a team effort to get the word out about our club to Bay Area residents and visitors that support Bayern.
Tell us about the community aspect of the fan club.
We are pro-actively working on expanding our activities beyond just watching the matches. We have recently started hosting monthly Stammtisch and also hosted a Holiday Party. We’re also forming a Mia San Francisco soccer team, producing additional Mia San Francisco apparel in addition to our t-shirts, and will host a FIFA ’15 Xbox tournament. We successfully organized our trip up to Portland to see Bayern play the MLS All-Stars and plan on traveling to Munich for Oktoberfest this year.
What is your favorite moment with the fan club?
The largest gathering so far was the 2014 DFB-Pokal final, when we filled the bar with over 100 members. However, it will be hard to top the atmosphere we created at Danny Coyle’s during the World Cup. Our Bayern bar became the place to watch all Germany matches. Watching Germany win the World Cup with a bar full of German supporters in the middle of San Francisco was unforgettable.
