“Valencia are one of the favourites for the title, alongside Kuban Krasnodar and Khimko Moscow,” said FCBB coach Svetislav Pesic. The game is somewhat of a reunion for Pesic and Dusko Savanovic, both of whom spent the 2010/11 season at the club. Pesic inspired the side to a great run of form, 12 successive wins to be precise, and saw his side get knocked out of the Euroleague at the quarter-final stage against Real Madrid (3-2).

“When I was at Valencia we played basketball the way I like it to be played,” explained Pesic as he looked back at his successful spell there. “The strength and depth of the squad, the defence, our offense and the way we turned defence into attack – we had the complete package,” remembered the 65-year-old. “That was the best basketball that has been played under me so far.”

Like Bayern, Valencia are in the Eurocup having been knocked out of the Euroleague. The club has won the title three times before: 2003, 2010 and 2014, making them the most successful side in the history of the competition.

Bayern’s record in the last 32 was the best in the competition. They won all six of their games and had a points difference of 97. “It’s rare for a German side to go unbeaten during this stage of the competition. It’s a great achievement,” said Pesic.

The only other sides with a 100% are Izmir and Krasnodar. As a result of having the best record, Bayern will have home-court advantage for the second-leg of any subsequent rounds of the competition they qualify for. “It’s an important advantage to have the second-leg at home,” added the head coach.
