FC Bayern kicked off the second half of the Bundesliga season with a win at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim with goals by Katherine Stengel (23.) and Eunice Beckman (68.), with one by TSG’s Stephanie Breitner (26.). With the win, Bayern stay close behind table toppers Wolfsburg before the two Bundesliga leaders go head-to-head next Sunday in Munich.
Thomas Wörle’s starting lineup was no surprise, including winter signing Dagny Brynjarsdottir and recently recuperated Germany international Leonie Maier. Nora Holstad was absent from the squad in addition to Vivianne Miedema, who picked up an injury during warm ups; Vanessa Bürki started in her place.
Ahead of the match, FC Bayern coach Thomas Wörle had warned:“The first match after the winter break is about getting back into the swing of things,” which ultimately proved right. Hoffenheim let up few opportunities, with only occasional scoring chances from both sides. Towards the middle of the first half came the first and second goals of the match by Katherine Stengel (23.) for Bayern and the equalizer by Hoffenheim’s Stephanie Breitner (26.), ending the first half with a score of 1-1. Super-sub Eunice Beckmann came on in the second half, and no other player needs fewer minutes of play to turn into goals as Beckmann scored Bayern’s second and game-winning goal (68.). The match concluded on a positive note with the long-term injured Carina Wenninger’s comeback, coming on for Katie Stengel right before the final whistle.
Next Sunday the Bayern women face table toppers and defending champions VfL Wolfsburg at the Grünwalder Stadion in Munich at 2 p.m. CET.
