SC Sand Match Report

Bayern women take lead in Bundesliga table

FC Bayern has taken the lead in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga following their 2-1 away victory over SC Sand. Sand’s Scurich gave the home team an early lead (2.) but was equalized by Lewandowski’s goal in the 29th, with Abbé scoring Bayern’s second and game-winning goal in the 69th minute. German international Lena Lotzen celebrated her comeback from a long-term injury layoff in the 57th minute. Champions Wolfsburg can still retake their position at the top of the table in their rescheduled game, potentially giving third-placed Frankfurt a hard time catching up.

Once again, injuries forced coach Thomas Wörle to change his line-up, this time replacing Leonie Maier, currently on a break due to muscle problems, with Katharina Baunach and Katie Stengel for Vanessa Bürki, who is expected to be out for the remainder of the season due to injury. Lena Lotzen, Nora Holstad, Carina Wenninger and Laura Feieringer were all available for action.

Bayern were faced with trouble right from the start as hosts SC Sand took the lead in the 2nd minute off a corner from Allison Scurich. Sand put on, as expected, a strong defensive performance, though Bayern were able to come back in the 29th minute with the equalizer from American Gina Lewandowski before heading into half-time.

In the second half, Bayern continued to put pressure, though without any goals scored. In the 57th minute, German international Lena Lotzen made her long-awaited comeback, coming on for Dagny Brynjarsdottir. Caroline Abbé was able to break through Sand’s defense and scored Bayern’s second and game-winning goal in the 69th minute.

FC Bayern now lead the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga with 47 points as a result of today’s victory over SC Sand, though runners-up Wolfsburg (45 pts.) and Frankfurt (43 pts.) can still make up the deficit in their rescheduled games due to Champions League commitments.
