Three months ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Canada, teams around the world are preparing by participating in international warm-up tournaments - Germany included. However, they got off to a bad start, losing their Group A opener in the Algarve Cup 4-2 against a strong Sweden side.
Germany started the match without FC Bayern players Melanie Leupolz and Leonie Maier and had a brilliant start, scoring two goals in the opening three minutes (Dzsenifer Maroszan and Simone Laudehr). But instead of consolidating and adding to their lead, Germany allowed Sweden to get back into the game and pull a goal back before half-time. Germany coach Silvia Neid introduced Leupolz in the second half but to no avail. Sweden equalized before the hour mark and added two more to turn the game on its head and get a deserved win.
In Group B, Vanessa Burki and Carolin Abbe started in a 2-0 win against Dagny Brynjarsdottir's Iceland. The two Swiss Bayern players celebrated their 100th appearance for their national team on the day
Meanwhile, over in the Cyprus Cup, Raffaella Manieri and Katja Schroffenegger went up against South Korea in their Group A opener with Italy coming out deserved 2-1 winners. Tinja Korpela and Finnland lost 3-1 against England in Group B and Vivianne Miedema's Netherlands lost 1-0 against Australia.
Last but not least, Austria played to a 1-1 draw against Slovakia with both Manu Zinsberger and Carina Wenninger going the full 90 minutes. Viktoria Schnaderbeck made an appearance in the second half.
