After the opening defeat to Sweden, the German women’s national team made amends in their well-deserved 2-0 victory over China in the second game of the group stage in the Algarve Cup.
After the team’s first encounter of the tournament, German national coach Silvia Neid called up eight new key players including Leonie Maier, marking her comeback with the national team after a long injury lay-off. Melanie Leupolz started in central midfield along with Sara Däbritz, who is set to join FC Bayern in the summer. The game started off at a cautious pace, though shortly before halftime Anja Mittag made it 1-0 for the Germans with a long-range shot from 22 meters out (41.). Towards the beginning of the second half, Dzsenifer Marozsan came on to replace Melanie Leupolz in the 71st minute and shortly afterwards made the decisive cross to Alexandra Popp, who headed in Germany’s second and final goal of the game, sealing Germany’s well-deserved 2-0 win (76.).
