Meet Bayern in St. Louis

St. Louis, the Gateway to the West, is known for blues music and barbeques, the famous Gateway Arch, and a number of prominent sports teams among other things. But one team in particular has recently found a home in the birthplace of American soccer, and it is no other than FC Bayern Munich.

In the sixth installment of our US fan club profiles, we talk to FC Bayern Munich Fan Club – St. Louis chairperson Matt Vorst about the fan club’s inception, growth, and community aspect. To learn more about the FC Bayern Munich Fan Club – St. Louis, visit it on social media and at its home pub Tigin Irish Pub.

How did you become an FC Bayern fan and what made you start a fan club?

During a trip to Munich in 1998, I encountered a group of passionate fans entering the Hofbräuhaus, singing songs, chanting, and raising glasses high. After inquiring into their celebrations, I was met with a smile and a bier, and we spent the remainder of the evening discussing the team, its history, and I even learned a few songs.

For the past 10 years, I’ve watched both Germany and Bayern matches at our home pub, Tigin. While watching Germany matches during the World Cup, I would see Bayern jerseys scattered throughout the crowd. I reached out to fellow fans on Facebook page asking if there was an existing fan club in the area, and with the help of many existing members across the country, our club was officially recognized in early 2015.

How would you describe the fan club’s growth?

I think that both Germany’s World Cup win and Bayern’s continued success have brought attention to the high level of talent in the Bundesliga. We’re looking forward to next season when Fox Sports starts showing Bundesliga games, which should help gain interest. The staff at Tigin also plays a roll in helping to expand our fan club base and we’ve picked up some patrons who may be watching a match and are unaware of the club, along with a few additional members through Facebook. We will soon have custom club scarves and merchandise as well and will wear them with pride.

Tell us about the community aspect of the fan club.

We have a diverse group who come from all ages and backgrounds. But when we join to watch a match, there is a special bond that Bayern fans share when we come together. Since we are in our first few months of existence, our primary focus has been recruiting members along with organizing watch events.

Apart from recruiting members, we’re planning to host fundraising drives for local organizations, along with partnering with The Pitch: Haiti, a non-profit organization that teaches youth responsibility through sport.
