U.S. Fan Club Atlanta

Bayern in the heart of the South

Georgia’s capitol Atlanta is home to more than just the state’s famous peaches, from a number of competitive sports teams to some of the best shopping and soul food the South has to offer. In early 2015, FC Bayern fan club Mia San Atlanta joined the Bayern Munich U.S. family, welcoming Bayern to Atlanta with true Southern hospitality.

In the seventh installment of the fan club profiles, Mia San Atlanta founder Heather Cooke discusses her experiences in becoming an FC Bayern fan and starting an official fan club. To learn more about Mia San Atlanta, visit it on social media and at its home pub The Elder Tree.

How did you become an FC Bayern fan and what made you start your own fan club?

My mother-in-law was born in Germany and my husband has always followed the German national team and FC Bayern.  After the 2002 World Cup and getting up in the middle of the night to watch the German team play, I knew I was hooked on the excitement of the sport, and it just made sense for me to start following Bayern because a lot of my favorite players played for Bayern, and my husband was already a fan.

My husband and I were tired of watching the games by ourselves so I looked everywhere for a fan club in the Atlanta area.  When I couldn’t find one, my husband said to me: “Well, babe, you are just going to have to start your own!”  Once I found the Facebook page of Bayern Munich Fans in Atlanta, it was really easy!

What is your favorite part about being involved with a fan club?

We don’t watch the games alone anymore!  We watch the games and laugh and talk the whole time.  We’ve made so many new friends in such a short period of time – it makes all of us feel closer to the team, all the way from Atlanta!

Tell us about the community aspect of the fan club.

We have 26 members right now. It seems like we get new members every week!  A lot of our members are either German or lived in Germany for some period of time.  Some of us, like me, just fell in love with the sport of soccer and then this team.  No matter what our background, we are all very passionate!

Since we were just founded in early 2015, we haven’t had any activities outside of watching matches. We are continually thinking of new things we could do together.  We are going to have a soccer “kick around” in the off-season and possibly a trip to Alpine Helen, GA to celebrate Oktoberfest.

Do you have a favorite moment with the fan club?

Because we’re such a new fan club our favorite moments happen just about every match day.  The first time a new person walks into the pub to see what we are all about and ends up having a great time – those are my favorite moments.
