Bayern Munich in Tinseltown

It’s quite the juxtaposition watching FC Bayern play in snow on your screen while it’s 80°F and sunny outside your window, but you’ll find that’s the case in the Golden State! FC Bayern has found a new home in the City of Angels thanks to fan club FC Bayern München Los Angeles. With over 60 members, FC Bayern München Los Angeles has continued to grow since its creation in 2014.

In the eighth installment of our fan club profile series, FC Bayern München Los Angeles fan club president Tom Fong talks about the fan club’s beginnings, their accommodating home pub, and plans for the fan club’s future. To learn more about FC Bayern München Los Angeles, visit it on social media and at its home pub Tom’s Urban LA Live.

How did you become an FC Bayern fan and what made you start a fan club?

I started to follow soccer when the US hosted the 1994 World Cup, and I was learning more about the sport, the US men's national team and ‘Die Mannschaft’. In high school, some foreign exchange students from Germany talked to me about the Bundesliga and pointed out that many of the players on the German national team played for Bayern Munich. They also told me about Bayern’s rich history and tradition, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

The ultimate goal with FC Bayern München Los Angeles is to establish something that wasn’t here before. Los Angeles is a huge area with Bayern fans scattered all over, but it didn’t really have an established Bayern presence. The fan club tries to create a local Bayern culture, and to provide the opportunity to allow a community of friends to come together and support Bayern.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank FC Bayern Munich Fan Club of New York City for providing support to help get the fan club off the ground and to thank all of our registered members who took the time to sign up. FC Bayern München Los Angeles could not exist without our registered members and board members – thank you!

How would you describe the fan club’s growth?

Developing key partnerships is crucial to the growth of a supporters club.  We are currently ironing out the details with a potential home bar in Tom’s Urban LA Live. It was a great relief when I finally found a place that is willing to accommodate us. They have GolTV (the Bundesliga's broadcaster) and they open at 9:00 AM.  Their customer service is really great, and they can also create a custom menu for us. While Tom’s Urban LA Live currently does not serve Paulaner products, we’re in the process of connecting Paulaner with them to serve Paulaner during our events. On top of that, they also help promote our events on their social networks. They’re awesome!

Describe the community aspect of the fan club.

We have informal get-togethers called “Stammtisch” where we do not watch games. We just hang out and socialize, even if there isn’t a Bayern game on. As our membership grows larger, we will have more of such events.
