FC Bayern Basketball geared up for their BEKO Basketball Bundesliga title defense with a 70-57 win against the EWE Baskets in Oldenburg in the regular season finale.
Nihad Djedovic once again shone for the Reds with 18 points, adding 4 assists. Heiko Schaffartzik's long-range accuracy in the fourth quarter ensured Bayern would leave Oldenburg with victory over the recently-crowned German Cup champions. John Bryant added 17 rebounds to dominate the paint.
Bayern finish the regular season in third place in the BBL standings and will face the FRAPORT SKYLINERS in the first round of the play-offs. Game 1 of the best-of-five quarterfinal series tips off at 20:30 CEST on Saturday, May 9th in the Audi Dome.
Scoring by quarter (FCBB - OLD): 24-15, 15-12, 13-18, 18-12
FC Bayern team: Nihad Djedovic (18 points/4 assists), Bryce Taylor (11/6 rebounds), Heiko Schaffartzik (11), Vasilije Micic (9/6 ast), John Bryant (8/17 reb), Dusko Savanovic (6), Vladimir Stimac (3), Robin Benzing (2), Anton Gavel (2), Jan Jagla, and Yassin Idbihi. DNP: Lucca Staiger.
Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FCBB: "We saw today that Oldenburg can steal a game, if you let them play. They took us out of the game once they started to execute their defense. However, good sides dust themselves off and find their way again. I think we deserved to win the game."
Mladen Drijencic, Head Coach, Oldenburg: "Congratulations to Bayern, they deserved to win. They impressed us with their physical play. We tried too hard from downtown. We did all we could to come back but the three-pointers from Heiko Schaffartzik hurt us."
Heiko Schaffartzik, Guard, FCBB: "We played very well in the first half. When Oldenburg switched to zone, we had problems. Fortunately, we didn't stop fighting. I was a little frustrated with how the third quarter went for me. I was able to focus that frustration into some good shots in the final quarter. It was very important for us to win on the road ahead of the play-offs. Frankfurt is a very well-coached team. We lost in Frankfurt, and they led at half time in Munich."
FCBB Head Coach Svetislav Pesic sent Vasilije Micic, Bryce Taylor, Nihad Djedovic, Dusko Savanovic and John Bryant to the court to start the final regular season game. Bryant opened the scoring with the first two points (2-0, 1'). Oldenburg got into the game with a short-lived lead, but Taylor earned it back, completing a three-point-play (5-3, 2'). A duel then began between scorers Djedovic and former NBA player Casper Ware. Djedovic started with a basket, and Ware answered. The two went back-and-forth, and their contest heated up when Ware knocked down a three-pointer. Djedovic, not to be outdone, responded with his own trey (14-10, 5'). Oldenburg veteran Rickey Paulding connected from beyond the arc to bring the Baskets within three (16-13, 6'). Bayern embarked on a 7-0 run, completed by Micic's two buckets in a row to build their first double-digit lead (23-13, 9'). Bayern would take a 24-15 lead after the opening quarter thanks to an aggressive defense, a solid edge on rebounding and an impressive 82% field-goal shooting percentage.
The teams struggled at the beginning of the quarter, taking two and a half minutes before scoring. Vladimir Stimac controlled the offensive glass, grabbing two rebounds and finished with a put-back layup to open the scoring (26-15, 13'). Djedovic followed with another score and the hosts had to call a timeout. The huddle didn't help, as Bryant sank a three-pointer (31-15, 15'). Taylor and Bryant later scored consecutive baskets to increase the lead (35-19, 17'). Oldenburg crept back with a run at the end of the quarter to make it 39-27 at the interval.
Savanovic started the second half with a nice post-up, spin drive and score (41-27, 21') and that sparked another run for the Reds, which ended with a Djedovic steal and score (47-30, 24'). The Baskets were forced to take a timeout, but this time they did respond. Ware got hot again, nailing consecutive three-pointers (47-39, 26'). Coach Pesic called a timeout, but it didn't help as Adam Chubb finished an 11-0 run with an emphatic slam dunk. Robin Benzing broke the hosts' momentum with a short jumper, and Micic was the recipient of a lucky bounce off the rim for a three-pointer. Order was restored and Bayern led 52-45 heading into the final quarter.
As he did in the last game against Berlin, Djedovic took control at the beginning of the fourth, scoring to keep Munich ahead (55-47, 32'). Savanovic followed with an important play. His three-pointer was short, but he grabbed the loose ball and scored to get Bayern back up by 10 points (57-47, 35'). Any chance for Oldenburg to come back was squashed by Heiko Schaffartzik, who connected from downtown (60-49, 36') and then made it rain down with two more three-pointers to effectively ice the game (68-51, 38'). Bayern earn the all-important confidence-building 70-57 road win before the playoffs.
