The defending champions have achieved their first goal. After a successful 3-1 series win against Frankfurt in the quarterfinals, Bayern’s ballers, led by coach Svetislav Pesic have progressed into the next round. The semis will be an intense matchup in which all of German Basketball is looking forward to. The German champions from München will battle against last year’s finalist, Alba Berlin.

Bayern’s first home game of the semi final series will take place on Thursday 28th of May (19:30 CEST) at the Audi Dome. A possible fourth game in this best of five series could take place in München on Tuesday 2nd of June at 20:00 CEST.

Svetislav Pesic is certain:”Alba has a very good team, but we are also not that bad“, the 65- year-old said. “These games will give us a new challenge. If we play just like we played against Frankfurt, then we can win.”

The road to the title seems like there will be another stop in Berlin. It is the third consecutive season that both teams are meeting in the playoffs. In the 2012-13 quarterfinals, Bayern swept Berlin as they took the series in three games. Last season the stage was set as the two teams met for the title. The four game series last year saw some memorable moments. The victory still resonates with Bayern fans. The 75-62 away win in game four was the goal that Svetislav Pesic and his team was waiting for as FCBB celebrated their first title since 59 years.

The team from Berlin is motivated after what happened last year. With great athletic ability and strong team play, Berlin head into the playoffs looking like strong favorites. Sasa Obradovic and his troops could have easily clinched first place, but after a 78-72 loss against Bamberg, they gave up that privilege. On the International stage, Berlin also knows how to dazzle: Up until the last day of the Euro League, the capital club nearly punched their ticket to the quarterfinals of the competition.

While München had to play an extra game against Frankfurt in the quarters, Berlin comes into this series well rested. After a 3-0 series sweep of Oldenburg, Alba sits as firm favorites. Since they finish in 2nd place, they have home court advantage in this series. A deciding fifth game in this best of five series will also take place in Berlin.

“Against Berlin we are going to need to work on our rebounding and defense. It’s also important that we concentrate on the game. If we stick to the game plan, then we have a good chance to win the series”, said Bayern playmaker Heiko Schaffartzik, who played for Alba from 2011-2013. Based on head to head matchups, Berlin comes into the series with an advantage. Berlin took three out of the four meetings including a win in the cup quarterfinal, a win in the Champions-Cup and lastly, another win at home. But Bayern finally cracked the code four weeks ago after they won 70-68 in the Audi Dome. Despite dropping 3 out of 4 games, Bayern understand that once the playoffs come around, then it’s a whole other game.
