"Soccer in the US has grown tremendously"

A long season came and went for all the clubs in Europe, yet here we are, enjoying so many international tournaments and games during the summer. It’s also a time to reflect on how far the game has come and the many changes that have occurred in my lifetime.

It has been well over 30 years now since I played in the US and it never ceases to amaze me how much the game has developed there since. When I first joined the New York Cosmos in the old NASL in the 1970's it was alongside a host of other big names like Pele, Bobby Moore, Carlos Alberto but also Johan Cruyff and George Best who played in Los Angeles. We were the pioneers back then, and soccer in the US has grown tremendously since. The US national team has participated in every World Cup since 1990 and most recently made it to the round of 16 in Brazil. I’m very confident that the US national team as well as the sport as a whole will continue to develop and be even more successful.

On a similar note, the Women’s World Cup in Canada this year is another example of soccer’s progress across all continents and teams. Women’s soccer in particular has also come a long way over the last decade. I have been following the tournament in Canada with great excitement. The German national team had a great start with their 10:0 win over the Ivory Coast and the quarter-final against France is sure to make for a great game. While the US and Canada may not have started their tournaments with such large winning margins, they are surely also contenders for the title. I’m also eager to see how Japan will do having surprisingly won the title in Germany in 2011.

Even with all the games and tournaments this summer, the off-season is a time to rest and reflect. For FC Bayern, you could say it was a good season. Of course, not the best since only one out of three trophies was attained, but it was the third championship in a row. And in the Champions League, one bad day and you can be out of the competition. The many injuries didn’t help either of course. Some of the players injured in the first half of the season came back in the second but were missing match practice which ultimately led to performance fluctuation. It made facing Barcelona without their best squad a difficult proposition. In that sense, it is understandable why FC Bayern didn’t make it past the semifinals, which in itself is a great accomplishment it should be said. If I had to pick out one sore spot from last season it was getting knocked out by Dortmund in the DFB Cup since FC Bayern controlled most of the game but ended up giving it away. Having said that, it was a successful campaign all things considered, one that Pep and the team can definitely build on in the coming season.
