Leonie Maier and Melanie Leupolz started for Germany in what proved to easily be the most trilling matchup of the tournament so far in their encounter with France. Both sides were eager to advance and gave up few chances until finally France scored the first goal in the second half, only to be equalized by Germany 20 minutes later. Sara Däbritz and Melanie Behringer came on towards the end of regular time before the game went to extra time and penalties. In dramatic fashion, the Germans defeated France 5-4 on penalties, with Melanie Behringer successfully converting the first one. Germany next face the U.S. in the semifinals on Tuesday, June 30.
Reigning World Cup champions Japan were shown a difficult time by a determined Australian side throughout most of the game. FCB young striker Mana Iwabuchi came on in the 72nd minute and shot the game-winning goal 15 minutes later, sending Japan to the semifinals where they will face England on Wednesday, July 1.
