Next to ranches, rodeos, and a rich history, you’ll remember more than just the Alamo after your next trip to Texas. FC Bayern has found a new home in the Lone Star State thanks to the official FC Bayern Munich Fan Club of Texas. With over 60 members, the fan club has continued to grow since its creation in 2014.
In the tenth installment of our fan club profile series, FC Bayern Munich Fan Club of Texas president Justin Gardiner talks about becoming a fan, organizing a fan club, and plans for its future. How did you become an FC Bayern fan?
I’ve always loved football (soccer), playing in high school and college. The journey to my Bayern fandom began in high school when my family hosted German exchange students and I fell in love with the culture. In 2013 my wife and I went to Germany for our anniversary and going to a Bayern Munich match was a “must” on the to-do list. Not having learned the German language, I researched and learned the songs and chants so I would be ready to participate. My experience during the match was magical. I’ve been to every American pro sport in person and I’ve never experienced an atmosphere like that. The experience was so good we bought tickets for the next match. From there, I was hooked.
What made you start a fan club?
Once becoming a big fan, I kept trying to find a place to watch the matches with other Bayern fans but couldn’t find anything. It was frustrating when trying to catch a game at a bar or pub but the matches weren’t shown. Even when the Bayern match was shown, EPL games were on audio and always took precedent. I knew if I had numbers, then I would have leverage with the pubs/sports bars. That’s when I started the process of making it official and went to as many places as possible, shared what I was doing, and signed people up.
My mission is to have a home base/pub and group of fans that meet in each of the big cities in Texas – Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, and San Antonio – so that no matter where we go we will always know where other Bayern fans are. I’m happy to say we have members in each of them.
What is your favorite part about the fan club? Do you have a favorite moment?
My favorite part is just being able to watch my favorite club with an atmosphere. When the people really show out it’s so enjoyable to celebrate Bayern goals and wins (it doesn’t hurt that we win and score a lot!)
My favorite moment with the fan club so far was on November 1st 2014 when Bayern beat Dortmund. It was a fantastic win with Robben scoring in the 85th minute to go ahead. We had our biggest turnout that day as well so the atmosphere was tense and electric! We are all hopeful and excited to replace that “favorite moment” next season with “When Bayern won the Champions League in 2016!”
