The GPS FC Bayern Experience Tour has began in earnest with two special days at Säbener Straße this past Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday afternoon, the two U14 boys and girls teams walked in the same doors as superstars such as Phillip Lahm and Thomas Müller for a training session with FC Bayern coaches. The girls had a session by FC Bayern Women's Assistant Coach, Natalie Bischoff whilst the boys were instructed by Thomas Doellner and Harald Cerny, U14 Coaches at the club. The players also had a tour of the complex and saw the fields in which the FC Bayern first team train.
Both teams returned the next day for friendly matches against the FC Bayern Youth teams. The boys played at 2pm against the U14 Bayern side. GPS South player Nolan Clack, capialized on a defensive error by the Germans, mid-way through the first half, with an outstanding finish over the out of position FC Bayern goalkeeper. After some great saves by goalkeepers Nate Drew (GPS NPL) and Zach Eisenbies (GPS Central), the home side bounced back with two quick goals, from outstanding possession moves. The second period saw no further scoring as GPS defended smartly against the technically gifted FC Bayern team.
After a brief interlude to meet FC Bayern and US National Team star, Julian Green, the girls kicked off against the U15/16 FC Bayern Women's team. After a scoreless first half, the game kicked into life after the interval, with FC Bayern going 1-0 ahead early on through a deflected strike. GPS responded strongly and a great move involving Addie Vettel and India Blythe (GPS MA NPL), was finished off by FC Bayern ID winner Olivia White (Synergy FC, VT).
The game ebbed back and forth and GPS goalkeeper Megan Christy (GPS NPL) made some great stops to keep the visitors in contention. However, Christy could do nothing to stop the two FC Bayern strikes scored mid-way through the half. Firstly an free kick was slammed home from close range and then a driving run by the FC Bayern foward concluded with a rifled finish into the top corner.
The GPS team were not to be denied, and they hit back with 10 minutes remaining through a superb solo goal from Abigail Gerdes (GPS Boston Elite). Despite pressure from GPS, they could not find the equalizer and FC Bayern came out on top 3-2.
After the game, GPS players and parents on the trip had a traditional Bavarian Dinner at the World Famous Hofbräuhaus, where they were entertained by a fantastic Brass Oompah band.
