Bayern suffer narrow loss in Flyeralarm Charity Cup

The FC Bayern München basketball players were beaten 68:66 on Wednesday evening by newly-promoted Bundesliga side s.Oliver Baskets Würzburg as part of the FLYERALARM Charity Cup. The Bayern side struggled to reach top gear in this early-season clash, and their opposition secured a hard-fought and ultimately deserved victory in front of 2,027 people at the s.Oliver Arena. There were positives from Bayern’s perspective, with debutant K.C Rivers scoring 12 points overall. The new arrival, who only completed his first training session with the team on Monday night, integrated very well into the Bayern team. The best news of the night however, was the 6,000 Euros that was raised for the FLYERALARM Initiative Standpunkt e.V.

First team appearance this Sunday at the Audi Dome Fan Match in München

On this Sunday 13th September (15:00 CEST), Bayern will appear in front of the Bavarian crowd for the first time this season. At the 'Audi Dome Fan Match', the first team will face 17 amateur basketballers, as part of the 'Fan Day'. Fans have the chance to watch the FC Bayern stars close up, and get autographs from the players (for example, returning player Deon Thompson) in a friendly and festive atmosphere at the Audi Dome.

The scores in all quarters: 16:16, 21:18, 10:15, 19:19.

FC Bayern Basketball players: Nihad Djedovic (16 points/7 Rebounds), Deon Thompson (15), K.C. Rivers (12), Dusko Savanovic (11), Daniel Mayr (5), Bryce Taylor (3/6), Karim Jallow (2), Andreas Seiferth (2), Angelo Görsch (dnp) und Dejan Kovacevic (dnp).

1st quarter

Bayern were forced to play in Würzburg with a depleted 10-man squad, after injuries to John Bryant (bruising on knee), Vasilije Micic (foot injury), Maxi Kleber, and the EM national players Paul Zipser, Anton Gavel and Alex Renfroe. Bayern didn’t have the best of starts, and were struggling with the defensive side of things. The hosts on the other hand made use of their fast break tactic to get off to a good start. Debutant K.C Rivers showed his quality both as a leader but also as a scorer, as Bayern got back into the game, equalizing the scores despite being eight points behind at one point (16:16).

2nd quarter

Both teams used the friendly match to their advantage, practicing routines and getting confidence into their play. Bayern’s long shot success rate has room for improvement, with them scoring just two out of ten. Returning player Deon Thompson (15 points in the first half) ensured through his strong offensive contribution that FCBB went in at half time 34:37 up.

3rd quarter

Both sides still required a bit of fine tuning, understandable given the fact that the season has just started. The defensive transition particularly was unlikely to meet the expectations of head coach Svetislav Pesic. Lots of instances of them losing the ball cheaply, and unsuccessful shots meant that the Bavarian side trailed 49:47 after thirty minutes.

4th quarter

K.C Rivers, who was given a long rest by coach Pesic in the third quarter, led a much more lethal Bayern attack in the fourth quarter. The newly-promoted BBL side from Würzburg represented a very difficult opposition, with Seth Tuttle almost single-handedly giving his side a strong lead with eight points in succession. The guests were not able to turn this lead around. Final score: 68:66.
