Allianz Women’s Bundesliga champions FC Bayern Munich will host last season’s runners up and DFB Cup winners VfL Wolfsburg this Friday at 6 p.m. CET at the Grünwalder Stadion. The game will be shown on DFB TV online.
“We’re all looking forward to this showdown against probably the best team in Europe right now,” said coach Thomas Wörle ahead of the clash against the current table leaders. “It’s a big challenge and we know that we’ll need a tour de force in order to come up against them. My team is in the position to do so, and they’ve always proven that over the last few years. We’ll have to rise above the challenge in order to overcome an individually strong VfL side as a collective,” said Wörle of the team’s initial situation.
Both teams have earned two wins after two matchdays. While Bayern was able to grab a 3-1 win at home against a strong Potsdam side and a 2-0 win away to Köln, Wolfsburg thrashed Jena 8-0 away and nabbed a 2-0 win away against recently promoted Bremen.
Lena Lotzen, Katharina Baunach, Sarah Romert, Veronica Boquete and Mana Iwabuchi will be unavailable for the match.
Balanced stats, goals scarce
There have been 22 league matchups between the two teams, with each able to determine 8 games for themselves and a fairly balanced goal difference of 32-33. Both games last season ended 0-0, and prior to last season Wolfsburg last defeated Munich in 2011.
