The FC Bayern women took home another three points after a 1-0 home win over last season’s runners up and DFB Cup winners VfL Wolfsburg. A header from Caroline Abbé (36th minute) was enough to see the German Champions earn a well-deserved victory on Friday.
“Defensively we were pretty good, we hardly gave up any chances,” said a “happy” FC Bayern captain Melanie Behringer after the final whistle. As a result of Friday’s win, the Bavarian ladies now stand at the top of the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga table until the rest of the matches are played on Sunday, when 1. FFC Frankfurt have the chance to get points when they take on Potsdam.
Dipping shot into goal
In front of a crowd of 1,816 at the Grünwalder Stadion, both teams gave up few opportunities, though both goalkeepers were put to the test, when former Bayern players Julia Simic was denied by FCB goalkeeper Tinja-Riika Korpela in the 2nd minute, and Wolfsburg keeper Almuth Schult kept Vivianne Miedema at bay (12.).
A standard situation put Bayern on the right course half an hour in, as captain Melanie Behringer’s cross sent Caroline Abbé to the far post, heading in Bayern’s 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. Just before halftime, Viktoria Schnaderbeck was able to block a shot from Simic and spare a potential equalizer in the 44th minute.
In the second half, the Wolves were noticeably more aggressive in putting pressure on the Bavarians, but Bayern continued to defend and was fortunate Alexandra Popp’s shot hit the post in the 66th minute. The Bayern women increasingly created chances on the counter with opportunities to extend their lead, though Miedema’s and Leupolz‘s late shots were blocked by Wolfsburg keeper Schult (71., 84.). Ultimately, the Wolves were unable to come back, keeping the scoreline 1-0 and seeing the FC Bayern women win their third consecutive Bundesliga game of the new season.
