FC Bayern got their first away win of the new Bundesliga season! Nora Holstad added the first (24.) before Sara Däbritz added a second after the break (59.) against a defensively strong and compact Köln side.
“I am completely satisfied with my team’s performance,” said coach Thomas Wörle after the game. “We took a while to settle in and adjust to our deep-lying opponents after which we played well, varied our game and won deservedly in the end, even though another goal or two could have been scored.”
Up next at home FC Bayern meet title contenders and recent Bundesliga and Champions League winners VfL Wolfsburg at the Grünwalder Stadium at 6:00pm local time.
Thomas Wörle rotated after their season-opening 3-1 win with Manuela Zinsberger in goal in place of Tinja Korpela and Melanie Leupolz made way for Sara Däbritz after her two goals the week before.
Bayern took control of the game from the start and pushed for the opening goal while Köln waited to counter. And after 18 minutes Köln nearly pulled off the surprise but just barely missed the goal. It was enough of a wake-up call and Bayern immediately went on the attack. Nora Holstad headed in a corner from captain Melanie Behringer to give the visitors the lead. It was enough to go into the break ahead.
The second half was much of the season with Bayern pushing while Köln patiently bid their time. Sara Däbritz cleverly took advantage of an opportunity to shoot from 25 meters out to double the lead. Köln were now pushed back and could no longer take capitalize on their counters. Bayern held out for a deserved win in the end and another three points.
A huge top-of-the-table clash is already looming early in the season with powerhouse Wolfsburg visiting Munich. Kickoff will take place at 6:00pm local time in what is sure to be a memorable match between the champions and the runners up.
