K.C. Rivers led all scorers with 22 points and Deon Thompson added a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as FC Bayern Basketball rebounded from a winless last week with a 92-84 win against Mitteldeutscher BC.
Three days after their near-upset in Istanbul against Fenerbahce, and week after losing their first Basketball Bundesliga game at home, Bayern Basketball were able to hold off the hungry Wolves who did not give up till the end. In front of 4,562 fans, Munich put forth a balanced effort that allowed Head Coach Svetislav Pesic to give the young players a chance for playing time.
Alex Renfroe contributed with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, and Dusko Savanovic tallied 17 points including three three-pointers.
Bayern are back in action this week to make their Euroleague home debut when they host last year's Eurocup champions Khimki Moscow. Tip-off is set for 20:45 CEST. The Reds continue their homestand on Sunday when medi bayreuth visit the Audi Dome for a BBL clash tipping off at 17:00 CEST.

Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FCBB: "We played below our talent-level today. After the good game in Istanbul we did not bring our game any step forward. I am not disappointed, but very sad, that we didn't use the opportunity to bring more quality in our game. Basketball is a team game, and we did not respond well as a team. A champion must be a champion in every game."
Silvano Poropat, Head Coach, MBC: "I am satisfied and proud, that we played a great game for our level. We allowed the game to be played open during the first ten minutes. We didn't earn the win in Munich, but the game gives us hope and courage for our future challenges."
Alex Renfroe, Paul Zipser, Nihad Djedovic, John Bryant and Deon Thompson were called upon by Bayern Basketball Head Coach Svetislav Pesic to get his team back in the win column .After MBC won the tip, Thompson made sure the visitors didn't score first by rejecting their first shot, and then putting Munich up on the scoreboard first by converting a three-point-play and later another basket for the early lead (5-2, 2' minutes). After the Wolves tied it up at 7-7, Bayern went on their signature run to open up a comfortable lead. Bryant scored with an easy lay-in, Savanovic followed with a three-point-play, and Djedovic sank a three-pointer for a 6-0 spurt (15-7, 5').
Chris Otule started dominating the paint for MBC, first by dunking it home. However, on the other side, Thompson responded with his own put-back slam (17-9, 7'). Otule was still active, first a bucket and then a pair of free-throws got MBC to within 17-13. However, it was time for 'Dusko from Downton'! Savanovic first from a few meters beyond the arc for a trey, and then immediately after, one from the top of the key to complete a 16-6 run (23-13, 8'). MBC were proving to be a tough opponent, they didn't wilt from the Red Wave. However a K.C. Rivers three-pointer kept Bayern up (28-19) and ensured a 29-21 lead after the first quarter.
Bayern had trouble with the Wolves press at the beginning of the quarter, and a 5-0 spurt by MBC tightened the game up and Coach Pesic had to call time (29-26, 12'). The break helped, as Bayern's aggressiveness kept the possession of the ball after a miss. Thompson scored, and Gavel added a quick three-pointer to open up a lead once more (34-27, 13'). The Wolves kept nipping at Bayern's heels, their pressing defense gave the Bavarians trouble all night. A steal and a fastbreak layup the other way got them within 34-31, but once again, Thompson scored , and that forced MBC to call time (36-31, 16').
The breather helped Bayern the most, after the timeout, Renfroe connected for three (39-31, 17'). Deon scored on another offensive putback, Renfroe made a huge defensive play with a block after MBC tried to score off yet another FCBB turnover, and later sank two free-throws for another 10-point lead (43-33, 18'). Thompson joined the block party, and Rivers made yet another three-pointer at the end of the quarter to extend the lead (47-38, 19'). Otule continued to give Munich fits in the paint but a drive-and-a-scoop by Renfroe earned Bayern a 50-42 lead at the halftime break.
MBC were liked caged beasts coming out of their locker rooms after the break, Lance Jeter knocked down a pair of treys and the game was once more close (52-50, 22'). Rivers got Munich back on track with a three-pointer, and Savanovic and Renfroe joined in on the long distance party and Rivers complete the run with one more three-pointer, timeout MBC (67-59, 27'). Bayern's defense started to assert control, forcing a turnover and recorded yet another block. Thompson dunked it home and Renfroe finished off the exciting quarter with a trey, Bayern took a 72-62 lead into the final ten minutes.
Savanovic and Thompson scored early in the quarter to maintain the Munich lead. But the Wolves continued to snip away at their deficit. Haukur Palsson's three-pointer and basket overshadowed a brilliant, acrobatic finish by Rivers, Coach Pesic called time out and MBC were ready to fight to the finish (78-70, 34'). Rivers finished a score once more with a nice reverse layup finish and Thompson slammed home one more dunk to extend the lead back to double digits (86-72, 37'). The Wolves went for broke as they continued to press and made a flurry of three-pointers but the Bayern lead held up and the Reds broke their two-game slide with the 92-84 victory.
