Just south of Los Angeles, California lies the city of Anaheim in the heart of Orange County. The city, which can boast German heritage, is home to a number of notable institutions such as Disneyland, but the real ‘Happiest Place on Earth’ (or in Orange County at least) is with FCB Anaheim.
In its one year, official FC Bayern Munich fan club of Anaheim has grown from a small group of 11 to almost 40 members. In the 14th installment of our fan club profile series, we hear from FCB Anaheim president Adam Harold about becoming a fan, the fan club’s beginnings, and Bayern in Anaheim. To learn more about FCB Anaheim, visit it on social media and its location Jagerhaus.
How did you become an FC Bayern fan & what made you start a fan club?
I got hooked on watching Die Mannschaft during the 2006 World Cup. When I married my wife, we watched the 2010 World Cup together, and she told me if I wanted to see the majority of the players from Die Mannschaft on a regular basis, I should watch FC Bayern. I started waking up every weekend morning before dawn to find some random website that was streaming FC Bayern games. When I finally found GolTV, I started having friends over to watch with me and my wife. It’s taken off since then.
We learned we could found an official fan club here in the US when FC Bayern announced their Starting XI promotion in early 2015. I loved creating a community of soccer fans with a common goal, to follow & support the best team in the world.
Does your club take part in any activities beyond watching the matches?
A great deal of our members are involved with the Phoenix Club. We don’t have an official partnership, but we show up to events dressed ready to rep Bayern and our fan club whenever we get the chance. As the Phoenix Club is one of the best ways to share German culture, we volunteer and spend our free time helping there. Additionally, all of our founding members are also members in a German/Austrian folk dance group (‘Die Gemütlichen Schuhplattler’).
How does your FC Bayern fan culture fit in within your local soccer culture?
Southern California is highly populated by the Latino community. When there is not a single place for Bayern fans to meet in Southern California, it’s a problem. But having the Phoenix Club as a sort of hub of German-American society in Orange County, we have been able to network and grow our ranks from 4 members to 38 members in just under a year. Apart from that, one would expect to only see Barcelona, Madrid, Mexico and Brazil jerseys, but one can find people wearing Bayern jerseys everywhere: at the beach, Angel’s stadium, Disneyland. And if we see them, we invite them to the Jagerhaus for a beer and a German pancake.
