Bayern sign American Justin Cobbs

FC Bayern Basketball has signed a new guard, with the 24-year-old American playmaker Justin Cobbs joining from Turkish top-division team Istanbul BSB and signing a contract until the end of the season. Bayern is also loaning 21-year-old point guard Vasilije Micic to Sebian champion Red Star Belgrade.

"We obviously had to do something in the guard position after K.C. Rivers' departure," said Bayern General Manager Marko Pesic after a busy Christmas period. "Justin is a very talented player, who showed his quality last year as a junior through his incredible energy and his team spirit. We hope that Vaso Micic can get some game time after a long time on the sidelines."

In the first ten games of the season for the TBL promoted team, Justin Cobbs has averaged 7.6 points and 3.3 assists per game. The point guard is best known in the Bundesliga for his performances last season for Bayern's playoff opponent Frankfurt, where he was top scorer with an average of 14.3 points, 4.4 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game.

"I'm very happy to be part of a big and well-established team," said Cobbs at the weekend. "I'm ready to help the team in every way I can to go on and win the championship."

After spending his first year in the NCAA in Minnesota, Cobbs played for three years at the University of California, where he played around 34 minutes per game and averaged 15.6 points and 5.8 assists in his final year. After try-outs with several clubs, including NBA team Golden State, he made his first-team debut in the 2014/15 season for Latvian club and Eurocup competitor VEF Riga.

In December 2014, he signed a contract with Frankfurt. There, he was not only involved in the Skyliners' BBL revival, but also impressed in twelve games in the EuroChallenge and the Final Four, averaging 16.3 points and 6.1 assists.

Cobbs trained last summer with NBA club Charlotte, before signing with Istanbul BSB. Cobbs may yet make his debut for Bayern on Wednesday in Tübingen, depending on the contract formalities and medical check being completed in time.

Vasilije Micic missed pre-season and the league opener in 2015/16 with a foot injury, however his contract with FCBB runs until summer 2017. He leaves Svetislav Pesic and his team after the 103-79 win over Würzburg.

"It's been hard in my position in the last few weeks after a long injury break, so I understand completely. I'll now look to stack up some minutes in Belgrade, with the aim of returning to Munich in the summer."

Micic moved to Munich in the summer of 2014 from Belgrade club Mega Vizura. He has played 39 BBL games and appeared ten times in the Euroleague (4.7 points and 2.2 assists per game).
