FC Bayern Basketball took advantage of a hot start by Bryce Taylor to build a huge halftime lead and coast to a 101-85 win against ratiopharm ulm.
Bayern (13-4) start the new year by extending their win streak to six games, while snapping Ulm's 7-game run. Taylor scored 18 of his 22 points by halftime while the rest of the team dominated the glass (27-10 rebounds) and the offensive flow (16-9 assists). Alex Renfroe looked fit after playing with a rib injury, adding 17 points (4-for-6 three pointers) and six assists. John Bryant helped control the paint with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Munich and Ulm will face each other once again in 10 days but this time in the Last 32 of the Eurocup. Before then, Bayern will travel to open up the Group G schedule at Banvit Bandirma on Wednesday, January 6th. After the BBL All Star Day, Ulm will return to the Audi Dome on Wednesday, January 13th (tip-off 20:00 CET).
Scoring by quarter (FCBB - ULM): 31-20, 28-19, 28-29, 14-18
FC Bayern Team: Bryce Taylor (22 points/3 three-pointers/8 rebounds), Alex Renfroe (17/4/6 assists), Deon Thompson (15/6 reb), John Bryant (12/11 reb), Dusko Savanovic (12/2 3ptrs), Anton Gavel (8/2 3ptrs), Nihad Djedovic (7), Andreas Seiferth (4), Paul Zipser (2), Justin Cobbs (2/6 ast). DNP: Daniel Mayr and Richard Freudenberg.
Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FCBB: "Ulm always plays very aggressive here. They attack and this season are more athletic. It is not easy against such an opponent. However, if we are able to play our transition game, we can also execute our gameplan. We played some really good basketball in certain phases. We will meet Ulm three times in the coming weeks. That was only the first game, now we need to work on our consistency."
Thorsten Leibenath, Head Coach, Ulm: "Everyone saw that the Bayern win today was absolutely well-deserved. If one looks for the reasons, one can say that we did not start with the necessary intensity. We only reacted in the first ten minutes, that allowed the opponent to many easy points, after that we got into the game. It is difficult to turn the game against an opponent like Munich when one sleeps through the first quarter."
Bryce Taylor, Guard, FCBB: "We started the game with high intensity and a lot of emotion and energy because we respect Ulm, they are a good team. We wanted to definitely let them know that they are playing a different type of team compared to the other BBL teams and that they can feel our presence defensively. We have to separate ourselves from the other teams, especially who are competing to get into the top four (seeds). We have to focus on ourselves, I feel like we are playing better, we have to continue to get better, stay healthy. I think we are going to be fine."
FCBB Head Coach Svetislav Pesic trusted Alex Renfroe, Anton Gavel, Bryce Taylor, Dusko Savanovic and John Bryant as the starting five for this battle between two of the BBL's hottest teams at the end of the 2015 calendar year. It was Bayern that got off to the fast start in the new year, Savanovic found Bryant open in the paint for the easy layup, Renfroe for three was good, Taylor and Gavel followed from long distance as well, and Taylor scored off the Ulm turnover, timeout visitors (13-2, 3' minutes). The break did not stop the Reds, baskets by Savanovic, Gavel and Bryant led to the Taylor show - a couple of more three-pointers and a fastbreak finish, the early rout was on (31-14, 8'). Despite a couple of three-pointers for Ulm to end the first quarter, Munich led 31-20.
Ulm came out with a bit more energy and hustle, a couple of scores did not sit well with Coach Pesic, and he called timeout (31-24, 12'). Renfroe and Thompson took over the scoring, first "Little Al" knocked down a pair of treys and two thunderous dunks from Thompson, Munich were back up into double-digits (43-30, 16'). Ulm were now submerged by the Red Wave, and their frustration showed after a couple of technical fouls (49-32, 17'). Justin Cobbs kept the pressure on, grabbed the rebound, started the break, bounce pass ahead to Taylor who finished with the dunk (51-32, 19'). The half ended after Thompson's missed free-throw, Bryant grabbed the rebound for the put-back lay-in, and Munich led 59-38 at the break. Bayern not only dominated the scoreboard, but on important stats like rebounds (27-10) and assists (16-9).
With the control of the game, Bayern opened up the defense and both offenses responded. Ulm connected on a couple of early three pointers, but Savanovic was left all open at the top of the key to answer from long distance (64-43, 22'). The Reds kept the pressure on, off a long rebound, Taylor started the break and a bounce pass to Djedovic for the easy two-points (71-48, 24'). Coming in as two of the teams playing well in the BBL, Munich and Ulm displayed their offensive firepower that kept the soldout crowd entertained but the scoreboard did not change. The ball kept bouncing Bayern's way, Thompson with the lucky offensive rebound and put-back tip-in (82-63, 29') and Renfroe's three-pointer gave the Reds the clear edge heading into the final quarter up 87-67.
Renfroe continued his solid game, driving through the lane, losing all defenders for the slam (89-71, 33'). Ulm battled to keep the score close, finishing the game on a solid run of points, but Bayern had the game in hand, winning 101-85. The win extends their streak to six games, while snapping Ulm's seven-game win streak. The two teams will face-off in ten days in Eurocup Group G on January 13th.
