FC Bayern Basketball prepared for the BEKO Basketball Bundesliga Top 4 this coming weekend with a 94-65 blowout win against BG Göttingen.
Bryce Taylor returned from an injury layoff with 27 points, and Maximilian Kleber continued to show his development since his injury last summer with 11 points and 6 blocks. Deon Thompson contributed 16 points and 7 rebounds in Munich's second consecutive BBL league win.
Bayern will host the BBL Top 4 this weekend with a Bavarian Derby against the Brose Baskets Bamberg on Saturday, February 20th. Immediately after, the FRAPORT Skyliners and ALBA Berlin play in the second semifinal. The losers of each game will face each other on Sunday followed by the winners playing for the BEKO Cup.
Scoring by quarter (FCBB - GOTT): 21-10, 22-16, 21-16, 27-18
FC Bayern Team: Bryce Taylor (27 points/5 three-pointers), Deon Thompson (16/7 rebounds), Maxi Kleber (11/6 blocks), John Bryant (9/5 reb), Dusko Savanovic (7), Paul Zipser (7/8 reb), Alex Renfroe (5/5 assists), Justin Cobbs (4), Anton Gavel (4/7 ast), Karim Jallow (4). DNP: Daniel Mayr and Sebastian Schmitt.
Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FCBB: "When one wins with such a result, there's not much to comment. With the experience of past years when we stopped playing after halftime, we defended well. The key was that we were able to control (Khalid) El-Amin and (David) Godbold overall with solid defense. Our 78% field goal percentage shows that we were able to create shots in transition with our good defense."
Bryce Taylor, Guard, FCBB: "We have an important week in front of us. Thus the win was all the more important. Our defense was decisive for the victory. The performance today was important for my personal rhythm and self-confidence. We are looking forward to the weekend and the game against Bamberg."
Johann Roijakkers, Head Coach, Göttingen: "Bayern was very solid on defense today, it was difficult for us to keep up physically. We still took the most from this game that was possible. I wish Bayern the best of luck in the cup."
Team Captain Bryce Taylor returned from an injury layoff and joined Deon Thompson, Maxi Kleber, Alex Renfroe and Anton Gavel in the starting five in their last game before hosting the Top 4 this weekend. Taylor showed no signs of rust keeping the Reds even early against Göttingen. Thompson took over with a personal 6-0 spurt to build a small lead (14-8, 6' minutes) and after Gavel scored to finish the 8-0 run, the hosts had to call timeout (16-8, 8'). Paul Zipser came off the bench to score three points and dish out an assist as Bayern led 21-10 after the first 10 minutes.
Göttingen's offense was able to score and stay with Bayern, but Thompson's dunk made sure the lead held in double-digits (30-19, 15'). Taylor found his shooting range, sinking three treys to extend the lead (41-23, 19'). Thompson finished off the scoring for the 41-26 halftime lead for the Reds.
Bayern's big men took over in the decisive third quarter. Kleber started the second half with a dunk and then a block (45-28, 21'). After former NBA player Khalid El-Amin hit a three-pointer to get his team back to within 51-39, John Bryant scored Bayern's next seven points, grabbed a loose ball and controlled the paint with rebounds and a block, Göttingen had to call timeout (58-41, 26'). Taylor's three-pointer took the lead to 20+ points, the defense held Göttingen to only free-throws and Bryant made sure the lead stayed comfortable after three quarters with a dunk and the 67-47 lead.
With victory inevitable, the highlight in the fourth quarter was Kleber who displayed the talent that brought him to Munich. After scoring a pair of free-throws and stealing the ball, he added one of his six blocks, scored a basket then displayed range with a three-pointer. His personal 7-0 run built the lead to 30+ points and the Violets had to call time (86-55, 37'). Karim Jallow took Bayern home with a dunk, a steal and basket for the final nails in the 94-65 win.
