Nihad Djedovic scored 28 points and Alex Renfroe added a double-double with 13 points and 13 assists as FC Bayern Basketball clinched a spot in the next round of the Eurocup with a convincing 77-62 win over Banvit Bandirma.
Focused on not repeating the mistakes in Euroleague, Bayern made sure they finished strong with the lead and won today instead of the added pressure of winning the final game of the group. Throughtout crucial phases of the game, the Reds controlled the defense which lead to scoring spurts that made the difference.
Munich will play in the Eurocup "Eighthfinals" on February 23rd and March 2nd.
Bayern now face German rivals ratiopharm ulm twice in the coming week, both on the road. First a BBL matchup on Sunday, February 7th at 17:00 CET. The teams will meet again to close out their Group G schedule on Wednesday, February 10th at 19:30 CET. The Reds return home on Saturday, February 13th to host the Basketball Lions of Braunschweig for a 18:30 tip-off.
Scoring by quarter (FCBB - BANV): 14-20, 27-15, 18-16, 18-11
FC Bayern Team: Nihad Djedovic (28 points/6 rebounds), Alex Renfroe (13/13 assists/8 reb), Dusko Savanovic (9/6 reb), Anton Gavel (9), John Bryant (8), Deon Thompson (6), Justin Cobbs (4), Paul Zipser, and Maximilian Kleber. DNP: Karim Jallow, Daniel Mayr and Sebastian Schmitt.
Svetislav Pesic, Head Coach, FCBB: "Today was a very good performance from our team. I cannot remember when we played that well defensively. Especially in the second half, our defense was incredible. Our plan was to take (Courtney) Fortson and (A.J.) Slaughter out of the game and we were successful in doing so. The players gave it their all and with such attitude, we can achieve a lot in this competition."
Nihad Djedovic, Guard, FCBB: "We executed the gameplan that Coach laid out for us today. That was a good win, but we have to keep our feet on the ground. We want to go deeper into this Eurocup tournament than last year. Overall we played good defense from which we can build."
Ernak Selcuk, Head Coach, Banvit Bandirma: "Congrats to Bayern Munich. They played clever and earned the victory. They took away our offensive rhythm and created many fastbreak opportunities. That is not normal for us, but we cannot compensate for our failures. We gave it our all, but it was not enough. Now we need to win against Bilbao at home."
FCBB Head Coach Svetislav Pesic looked to clinch a spot into the next round of the Eurocup with a win and thus chose Alex Renfroe, Anton Gavel, Dusko Savanovic, Paul Zipser and John Bryant to be the starting five. And the team started well, jumping out quickly to a 6-0 lead after only two minutes. Banvit Bandirma are quite accurate from distance and they caught fire from behind the three-point-line. Their makes sparked a 13-0 run. Nihad Djedovic came off the bench and stopped the run (8-13, 7' minutes), and Deon Thompson joined him to score a couple of baskets at the end, but the visitors held on to the 20-14 lead.
Djedovic started the second period continuing the scoring run with a couple of baskets, and Justin Cobbs tied the game (20-20, 12'). Djedovic completed the 12-0 run with a pair of free-throws and a score (24-20, 13'). The Reds built on that lead with yet another run, the 11-2 spurt capped by Djedovic's three-pointer earned Munich their first double-digit lead (35-25, 18'). Gavel wrapped up the scoring before halftime, including a layup before the buzzer, Bayern led 41-35 at haltime.
Banvit were intent on making this a fight, and so they jumped out with a 9-2 run to take the lead (43-44, 23'). Bayern kept in stride and both teams matched each other during a stretch where the lead changed six times. Renfroe's three-point-play (51-49, 27') started an 11-2 run to ensure Bayern had the 59-51 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bayern's second half of dominance continued, a 9-0 run culminating by a Djedovic three-pointer indicated Pesic's men were looking to close this one out (68-55, 36'). Banvit were out of solutions and when another Djedovic trey went in (75-60, 39'), the writing was on on the wall. Bayern won 77-62 to clinch a spot in the next stage of the Eurocup.
