Pep, Müller and Lewandowski

"Lewandowski and Müller crucial to Bayern’s success"

The second half of the season is now underway, and with that also comes a time to reflect on the challenges ahead in the remaining months of the season. Pep Guardiola will leave FC Bayern at the end of the campaign and depart for England after a productive three seasons with the club.

The team as it is now, the style of play, is all the result of his work. I would’ve liked for him to stay at least one more year, but that’s the way it is, and you can’t bind someone forever.  It’s my hope, of course, that his mission and legacy at Bayern will be crowned with a great success at the end of the season.

On the pitch, meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller have been crucial to Bayern’s success this season. Part of what makes them so effective is their synergy, and ability to play off each other. The two of them have acquainted themselves with each other very well and harmonize perfectly in the game.

In addition to that, both are world-class players, are not self-centric, and there is no jealousy involved. For both of them, the success of the team as a whole is what counts first and foremost, the results of which are reflected in the team’s achievements this season.

One of the main areas of focus for the remaining half of the season, naturally, is the Champions League. I think the biggest contenders this year will, again, be Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. Bayern face 2015 runners-up Juventus in the Round of 16, and it’ll be a tough nut to crack.

They’ll have to put on top performances now in the knockout stages – you can’t let yourself have a bad day, which they know from the last two years after getting knocked out in the semifinals both times. If they overcome that hurdle, they’ll have a good chance at getting far in the competition.
