They did it! For a second consecutive year, the FC Bayern women are German champions. The title was sealed in dominant fashion with a 5-0 win against Bayer Leverkusen with two games to spare. This is the third title in club history after 1976 and 2015.
"To win the title is simply sensational," said midfielder Melanie Leupolz. "I'm so proud of this team. Indescribable." The team's top scorer, Vivianne Miedema who scored a hattrick in the 5-0 win was also at a loss for words following the final whistle, "Last year no one expected it. This year we had more pressure and still did it. That's amazing."
Coach Wörle praises team spirit
Much has been said about the team's incredible record this season (17 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss) and a 40-match unbeaten run, but it's the collective team spirit that really stood out this season and was the foundation of their success.
"What this team accomplished over the last ten months is just sensational. We proved ourselves against very strong opponents. The words 'sensational' and 'phenomenal' are very fitting," said coach Thomas Wörle. He went on to highlight "outstanding team spirit" and "great motivation" as decisive factors in the success.
