What a night! The Bavarians were exceedingly happy after the astonishing 5-1 victory over Arsenal in the Champions Leaue last sixteen first leg. "It was a deserved victory," said a happy Carlo Ancelotti, who was "very pleased" with what he saw. Philipp Lahm added: "It puts us in a very, very good position for the return."
Reaction to Bayern v Arsenal
Carlo Ancelotti: "It was a deserved victory. The balance was perfect, we were compact and quick. We also let them have very few chances, made use of the space and demonstrated our qualities up front. All in all I'm very pleased. But it was only the first part, the second awaits us in London. We'll have to turn in a display like today's."
Philipp Lahm: "We played very well before the penalty, then not so well until half-time, but sensationally after the interval. We demonstrated our qualities in possession and scored the goals at the right time. The 5-1 victory puts us in a very, very good position for the return."
Arjen Robben: "I have to say I'm a little surprised at our good display - althoough on the other hand I'm not. We're rock-solid when it's do-or-die. The team just have great character. We shouldn't have conceded the equaliser. Overall we dominated the match and were in control, scoring beautiful goals in the second half."
Thiago: "Arsenal are serious opponents, but we beat them in an astonishing manner. We conceded the equaliser in the first half, so we had to score more goals in the second. We really wanted it, and we knew we're able to do it."
Arsène Wenger (Arsenal manager): "The result is very bad for us. It was an odd match. We played fairly well in the first half, we had two presentable chances before half-time. We subsequently had problems, Koscielny's injury was a factor. After the goals in the 53rd and 56th minute we lost our discipline. The last 25 minutes were a nightmare for us, we didn't find solutions any more."
