This past weekend saw 420+ players from across the GPS network gather together in Rock Hill, South Carolina for the GPS National Team Camp. Over 50 clubs representing 20 states, two Canadian Provinces and Puerto Rico sent their their top players to SC to compete for a spot on their respective GPS National Team.

Players arrived throughout the day on Friday with the Opening Ceremony beginning at 4:45pm. GPS DOC Peter Bradley addressed the crowd laying out the expectations for the weekend and congratulating players on being nominated to appear at the camp.

The Opening Ceremony also saw the naming of the GPS National Team Female and Male Players of the Year.

The Female Player of the Year award went to Aki Yuasa who currently plays for Synergy FC in Vermont and competed at the Surf Cup with the 02 Girls this past summer.

The Male Player of the Year was awarded to Andrew Rent of GPS Maine. Last year Andrew travelled to Munich to represent Team USA in the FC Bayern Youth Cup as well as traveling with the 02s to the Surf Cup in California where they claimed the title.

The Opening Ceremony ended with a presentation by STATSport, GPS National Team Program official Partner. 60 players were chosen by their coach before the beginning of the camp to wear the state-of-the-art GPS tracking system which tracks things such as their average speed, location on the pitch, and how many sprints the player makes amongst a host of other stats.

Following the Opening Ceremony players immediately got to work. The weekend consisted of four on field sessions per age group in addition to multiple workshops and team building activities off the field.

The final day of camp also saw the announcement of the Team USA roster which will compete at the FC Bayern Youth Cup in Munich in May. In addition to the GPS National team staff, Klaus Augenthaler of FC Bayern Munich was also be in attendance. Augenthaler represented FC Bayern in a glittering career which also saw him lift the FIFA World Cup in 1990 as part of the West Germany squad. Coordes was assistant manager at FC Bayern for two spells and also managed VFB Stuttgart and Hamburger SV.
