As part of the Year of German-American Friendship, the Goethe-Institut hosted the Bundesliga-Festival, a nationwide contest to identify the country's greatest Bundesliga experts in middle school and high school!

The participating teams were divided into three regions: West, Central and East. From October 2018 through February 2019 the teams answered questions based on the “Match of the Month” video and predicted the scores of Bundesliga matches. The teams would receive points for all correct answers. After each round, the standings would be posted on the Step into German website.

Two participants from each of the ten teams with the highest point total qualified to attend the “Bundesliga Festival” of their region (West: San Francisco, Central: Chicago, East: Washington D.C.).

At the “Bundesliga Festivals” the two members of the qualified teams competed in various Bundesliga-related activities. The winning team of each “Bundesliga Festival” were crowned the grand prize winners.

All teams participating at a “Bundesliga Festival” received Bundesliga team jerseys and other soccer-related prizes.

The winners of the San Francisco “Bundesliga Festival” competition won a trip to Germany where they cheered on FC Bayern against Werder Bremen in Arpil.

The two wining students were Cael Rowley & Brayden Gonder from Utah. Hear what they had to say about their unforgettable experience below!

Cael Rowley, 18 years old: I think Germany is a experience that I will never forget. The culture and lifestyle of Munich and the people are super awesome, and I think it’s culture is one of the most impressive ones in the whole world! I’m super grateful for the opportunity to spend time there, and in the future I hope that I can visit the amazing country again! I encourage any German student pursuing in the competition, that they should take it seriously. It seriously is an experience that is worth every second!

Brayden Gonder, 16 years old: This is Brayden. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to go to Germany! I had such a great time! Germany is such a pretty place! My favorite part about the trip was the soccer game! I have watched a lot of soccer on tv, but the feeling of being inside that magnificent stadium was unreal. It was breathtaking! The game was amazing too! Bayern Munich play such good soccer and it was a dream to watch them in real life! Besides the game, I loved everything about Germany! As we toured Munich, I would stare in awe at just about everything! Everything is so pretty there and I loved every second of my trip. Thank you so much again!
