FC Bayern have secured first place in Champions League Group B with a game to spare thanks to the 6-0 win away at Red Star Belgrade. It means the record German champions will face a team that finishes second in their section and be able to play the second leg of the last 16 at Allianz Arena. With one game left to play in the group stage, fcbayern.com takes a look at how the other groups are shaping up and who the Reds could face in the new year.
Group A – Real Madrid
Real Madrid are confirmed as the second-place team in Group A behind Paris Saint-German and are therefore a possible opponent for Bayern in the round of 16.
Group C – Shakhtar Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb or Atalanta
Second place in Group C will go down to the final day with Manchester City already guaranteed top spot. Shakhtar Donetsk (6 points), Dinamo Zagreb (5) and Atalanta (4) are all still in the running for the final last-16 spot. The Croatians host City on Matchday 6, while Atalanta head to Ukraine.
Group D – Atletico Madrid or no opponent
Atletico Madrid currently occupy second spot in Group D on seven points but can still be caught by Bayer Leverkusen on the final day, who are just a point behind. Should the Bundesliga club overtake the Spanish side then Bayern cannot face a team from Group D due to country protection in the next round. Juventus already have first place wrapped up.
Last season Bayern faced eventual champions Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16, and that could happen again this year.
Group E – Liverpool, Napoli or Red Bull Salzburg
There’s still everything to play for in Group E as Bayern’s last-16 opponents from last season, Liverpool (10 points), former FCB coach Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli (9) and Red Bull Salzburg (7) all vie for the two qualifying spots on the final matchday. Jürgen Klopp’s side have to go to Austria while the Italians host eliminated Genk.
Group F – Inter Milan or no opponent
Group F provides the same scenario as Group D. Inter Milan are currently second with seven points and ahead of Borussia Dortmund on the head-to-head record. BVB host Slavia Prague on the final day and can overtake the Italians, who welcome guaranteed group winners Barcelona, which would mean no possible opponent for FCB from Group F.
Group G – Lyon, Zenit Saint Petersburg or no opponent
There are three possible scenarios in Group G. RB Leipzig lead the section on 10 points and are already through but could still finish second. Again, Bayern could not face a fellow Bundesliga club in the next round. Lyon are currently in second with seven points but host Leipzig on the final day. The French side have the same number of points as Zenit, who head to eliminated Benfica.
Group H – Ajax, Valencia, Chelsea
Group H is equally exciting with a game to play. Ajax (10 points) and Valencia (8) face each other while Chelsea (also 8) host eliminated Lille with everything to play for.
The final round of games in the group stage take place on 10 and 11 December. The draw for the last 16 is on the following Monday, 16 December.
