FC Bayern beat FC Augsburg 5-3 in Saturday's Bavarian derby. Mergim Berisha handed the visitors an early lead but João Cancelo levelled the scores before Benjamin Pavard bagged a brace, with Leroy Sané rounding off a comfortable half-time lead for Munich. Berisha scored from the penalty spot before Alphonso Davies put the game to bed, and Irvin Cardona's stoppage-time goal was little more than a footnote.
The German record champions started with Yann Sommer in goal and Pavard, Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano in defence. Cancelo, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala and Davies took up station in midfield, with Sané, Serge Gnabry and Sadio Mané in attack. Thomas Müller, Mathys Tel, Ryan Gravenberch, Noussair Mazraoui and Daley Blind took over from Gnabry, Mané, Musiala, Davies and de Ligt in the second half.
Brace for Pavard
Augsburg made a bold start, and an early setback came when Berisha picked up a loose ball at the edge of the box and beat Sommer. Bayern soon took control of the game, with Cancelo and Musiala seeing their efforts saved. Gnabry aimed too high but a goal was coming and duly arrived when Cancelo sidestepped a defender and beat keeper Rafal Gikiewicz, scoring his maiden goal for FCB.
Munich soon turned the tide, Mané's overhead kick inviting Pavard to smash home from close distance. Sané put a free-kick into the wall before Arne Maier tested Sommer at the other end. Augsburg failed to clear a ball from a corner and Pavard rounded off his brace with a scissor-kick. Gikiewicz saved a deflected Mané cross but Sané was on hand to mop up from close range on the stroke of half-time.
Davies seals it
Proceedings were similar after the restart. Mané saw a shot blocked before Bayern had the ball in the net for a fifth time, but the Senegal international's goal was ruled out for offside. He then miscued two further efforts. The men in red engaged cruise control now, Ruben Vargas firing over before Sommer denied Maier. However, referee Florian Badstübner pointed to the spot when de Ligt upended Irvin Cardona in the race for the rebound, with Berisha dispatching.
Upamecano headed wide and Sané saw two efforts saved, but Cancelo's fine cross invited Davies to hook home on the slide and banish any last lingering doubts. Tel fired wide before Vargas' cutback invited Cardona to turn in deep into added time as Bayern sealed three points.
The victory takes Bayern onto 52 points from 24 matches, two points clear of Borussia Dortmund after they were held at Schalke in the evening. FCB will be back in action next Sunday when they travel to face Bayer Leverkusen.
