FC Bayern fell to a 3-2 defeat away at Heidenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon. Harry Kane and Serge Gnabry netted for Bayern late in the first half. The hosts levelled the scores through Kevin Sessa and Tim Kleindienst after half-time, the latter adding a third with 10 minutes to go.
The Bavarians started with Sven Ulreich in goal and Joshua Kimmich, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in defence. Konrad Laimer and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Gnabry, Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala, with Kane up front. Mathys Tel, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Raphaël Guerreiro and Bryan Zaragoza came on for Gnabry, Musiala, Goretzka and Müller in the second half.
Kane breaks the deadlock
Bayern dominated possession from the off but struggled against Heidenheim's dogged defending, with clear-cut chances few and far between in the first half-hour. Goretzka and Müller saw shots blocked before the latter hit the side-netting after some quick footwork in the box.
Bayern took the lead when Kane turned home Gnabry's delivery into the area. Munich then doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Davies' cross found the unmarked Gnabry, who headed past keeper Kevin Müller.
Heidenheim comeback
The hosts were livelier after the restart and pulled one back when Marvin Pieringer released fellow half-time substitute Sessa, who slotted home. The leveller came one minute later as Jan-Niklas Beste's cross invited Kleindienst to beat Ulreich. Bayern went looking for a reply and Kane fired narrowly wide.
Musiala had an effort off target and goalkeeper Müller denied Tel, with Ulreich making a fine save against Sessa at the other end. Beste curled a free-kick just over the bar before the promoted side completed their comeback as Pieringer played through Kleindienst to round off a counter. Tel and Bryan saw efforts saved as Bayern were condemned to defeat.
The result means Bayern have 60 points from 28 matches, 16 short of Bayer Leverkusen and three clear of VfB Stuttgart, who take on Dortmund later on Saturday. The Bavarians will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to face Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.
