FC Bayern fell to a 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Saturday evening. Karim Adeyemi handed the visitors the lead early at the Allianz Arena. Bayern were dominant after that but struggled to find a way through. The contest was balanced in the second half until Julian Ryerson sealed the final scoreline in the closing stages.
Bayern lined up with Sven Ulreich in goal and Joshua Kimmich, Eric Dier, Matthijs de Ligt and Alphonso Davies in defence. Konrad Laimer and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala, with Harry Kane as the target man. Kingsley Coman, Mathys Tel, Serge Gnabry, Noussair Mazraoui and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting took over from Sané, Müller, Musiala, Laimer and Davies in the second half.
Behind at half-time
Munich started on the front foot, Sané seeing a shot blocked before Kane miscued a header. Dortmund took the lead against the run of play when they won the ball in midfield and Julian Brandt's through ball found the charging Adeyemi, who beat Ulreich. The goal boosted the away side for a spell, former FCB man Mats Hummels firing wide, but Bayern soon reasserted their authority.
Kane headed wide from close distance before Adeyemi miscued at the other end. Dortmund put up dogged resistance, but Bayern had their chances, Sané seeing an effort deflected behind before Hummels made an acrobatic block to deny Dier from close range. Munich set up camp in Dortmund's half now but still found themselves trailing at half-time.
Tough going
The pendulum swung the other way after the restart, de Ligt making a crucial block against Adeyemi before Ulreich made a fine stop to deny Felix Nmecha. Ian Maatsen fired wide from a counter-attack, but Dortmund started to drop back as Thomas Tuchel made attacking changes.
Kane miscued another header and Coman saw a shot saved from the edge of the area. BVB keeper Alexander Meyer beat Kane to a Kimmich free-kick, but the away side then doubled their advantage with ten minutes to go when Sebastien Haller teed up Ryerson to fire home from the right of the area. Kane powered a header past Meyer, but the goal was chalked off for offside after VAR intervention as the scoreline remained 2-0.
The result means Bayern have 60 points from 27 matches, 13 short of Bayer Leverkusen and four ahead of VfB Stuttgart, who take on Heidenheim on Sunday. The Bavarians will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to Heidenheim.
