FC Bayern came from behind to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Nico Elvedi and Aleksandar Pavlović traded goals in the first half, Harry Kane handing Bayern the lead midway through the second half. Matthijs de Ligt put the game to bed in the closing stages.
Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, de Ligt, Eric Dier and Alphonso Davies in defence. Pavlović and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala, with Kane up front. New signing Sacha Boey, Mathys Tel and Raphaël Guerreiro took over from Mazraoui, Müller and Davies in the second half.
Level at half-time
Bayern hit the ground running and soon came close to a goal when Sané hit the crossbar before dragging wide minutes later. Munich dominated the visitors with possession in the early stages. Sané fired over and Kane had an effort blocked before forcing a fine save from goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas.
Neuer saved Franck Honorat's cross-cum-shot, de Ligt cleared Rocco Reitz' follow-up off the line and Jordan headed just wide as the momentum swung the other way for a spell. Gladbach then took the lead when Elvedi intercepted a pass and beat Neuer from 15 yards. Bayern went looking for a response, Goretzka firing over from distance, but the leveller came when Pavlović crowned fined interplay and pass from Müller to beat Nicolas from close range on the stroke of half-time.
Kane and de Ligt seal it
It was a balanced affair after the restart. A deflected Luca Netz effort went wide before Musiala hit the side-netting at the other end. Clear-cut chances were at a premium for some time, with Kane testing Nicolas and Reitz firing wide.
Bayern finally took the lead when Nicolas failed to hold a Goretzka cross, with Kane capitalising on the mix-up to nod into an unguarded net. Both Davies and Dier made blocks against Honorat before Sané's free-kick found the unmarked de Ligt, whose header at the far post found the net via the underside of the crossbar. Tel saw a header saved as Bayern sealed a deserved victory.
The result takes Bayern onto 50 points from 20 matches, two short of Bayer Leverkusen. The Bavarians will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to face Leverkusen in a mouth-watering clash at the top.
