Hat-trick hero Harry leads seven-goal rout

FC Bayern beat VfL Bochum 7-0 on Saturday to claim top spot in the Bundesliga overnight. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Harry Kane, Matthijs de Ligt and Leroy Sané handed Bayern a four-goal lead before half-time, with Mathys Tel scoring and Kane adding another two goals in the second half. Kane's hat-trick means he boasts seven goals after only five Bundesliga matches, a new club record.

Boss Thomas Tuchel shuffled his deck, making four changes to the XI that saw off Manchester United on Wednesday. De Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Kingsley Coman and Choupo-Moting came in for Dayot Upamecano, Leon Goretzka, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry.

It meant Sven Ulreich featured between the sticks, with Mazraoui, de Ligt, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in defence. Konrad Laimer and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Sané, Choupo-Moting and Coman, with Kane up front. Upamecano came on for de Ligt at half-time, with Frans Krätzig, Tel, Goretzka and Thomas Müller replacing Davies, Choupo-Moting, Kimmich and Coman in the second half.

Dominant display

Bayern roared out of the blocks and almost took a first-minute lead, but keeper Manuel Riemann denied Choupo-Moting's close-range header. Three minutes later Sané charged forward and found Coman, whose square invited Choupo-Moting to tap in. Laimer headed over, but Kane soon made the most of a mix-up in the box, finishing clinically to make it two.

Chances came and went for Sané, Mazraoui and Coman before de Ligt rose high to meet a Kimmich corner and head home. Munich often found themselves confronted by space rather than opponents, and Sané rounded off a more than comfortable half-time lead after a Kane through ball.

Plain sailing

Proceedings were similar after the restart, Upamecano seeing a header saved before a Kane effort was blocked. Bayern were soon awarded a penalty for handball, Kane dispatching to make it five.

Still FCB were not done, and a Coman shot shaved the post before Krätzig drew a save from Riemann and Mazraoui headed over. Kane intercepted a pass and teed up Tel, who found the far bottom corner of the net to continue his excellent scoring run off the bench this season. Riemann denied Sané, but Kane netted from close range to round off his hat-trick.

The result takes Bayern onto 13 points from five matches. Only Leverkusen, who take on Heidenheim on Sunday, can topple Munich from their perch this weekend, but they would need at least six goals. The German record champions will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face Preußen Münster in the DFB Cup.
