Choupo-Moting for Musiala
FC Bayern battled from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw away at RB Leipzig on Saturday evening. Loïs Openda and Castello Lukeba handed the home side a two-goal lead in the first half, but Bayern were dominant after the restart, and Harry Kane pulled one back from the penalty spot before Leroy Sané levelled the scores.
The Bavarians started with Sven Ulreich in goal and Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in defence. Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Sané, Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman, with Kane at centre-forward. Raphaël Guerreiro and Mathys Tel took over from Goretzka and Coman at half-time, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting coming on for Musiala in the closing stages.
Trailing at half-time
Bayern got off to a good start and had a golden chance after two minutes, when Kane slipped in Musiala. The youngster had only Janis Blaswich to beat, but the RB keeper made a strong save. Davies saw an effort blocked, but Leipzig started to get a grip. Emil Forsberg picked up a stray pass from Ulreich and had a go from halfway, but the ball went wide. Xaver Schlager soon set up Openda, who found the net with the help of a deflection.
Coman fired wide, but at the other end Ulreich missed a corner, with Openda nodding down for Lukeba to bury. With the home side solid at the back, chances were at a premium now, and Sané fired wide before half-time.
Bayern bounce back
Yussuf Poulsen miscued a header straight after the restart, but Bayern reasserted their dominance and were awarded a penalty for handball against Benjamin Henrichs, with Kane dispatching. Guerreiro hit an effort just wide and Tel saw a shot saved, but Munich levelled the scores on the break from a Leipzig corner, with Musiala racing away and setting up Sané, who beat Blaswich.
Thomas Tuchel's men maintained the pressure but lacked the final ball to complete the turnaround. David Raum fired off target and Sané's chip evaded Tel at the other end before Blaswich beat Tel to another Sané pass. Choupo-Moting saw a header saved before Ulreich shone when he raced out to deny Benjamin Šeško as the encounter ended in a stalemate.
The result means Bayern are still unbeaten with 14 points from six matches, lying third in the table behind Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart. The Bavarians will be back in action on Tuesday, when they travel to face Copenhagen in the Champions League.
