FC Bayern were held to a 1-1 draw away at Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon. Bayern dominated possession throughout, but Union were solid at the back. Munich had to wait for 75 minutes until substitute Leroy Sané handed them the lead, only for Benedict Hollerbach to level the scores with 10 minutes to go.
Bayern started with Jonas Urbig in goal and Josip Stanišić, Dayot Upamecano, Eric Dier and Alphonso Davies in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, with Harry Kane up front. Sané and Hiroki Ito came on for Gnabry and Olise in the second half.
Goalless at half-time
Bayern were dominant but ran up vainly against the rock of Union's defence. Upamecano fired wide from distance before Gnabry miscued a header. Munich increasingly camped out in the final third, but Olise saw a shot blocked and miscued another effort.
Goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow denied Musiala before Gnabry fired off target. Olise soon set up Gnabry, but Rønnow made a fine save on the stroke of half-time as it remained goalless.
Sané's goal not enough
A Goretzka shot was blocked and Rønnow denied Kane after the restart. Kimmich almost put through his own goal, but Urbig was on hand. Rønnow saved from Olise and Urbig denied Josip Juranović from the ensuing counter. Musiala soon drove into the box, but Rønnow proved equal to his shot in the home goal.
Bayern saw a number of shots blocked, but the opener came when Olise released Stanišić, who cut back for Sané to slot home. Union levelled the scores when Urbig parried Juranović's cross and Hollerbach tapped in. Musiala fired over and a Kimmich corner evaded Dier, but another goal refused to come.
The result means Bayern have 62 points from 26 matches, nine clear of Bayer Leverkusen, who take on VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. A number of FCB players will be on national team duty during the international break before Munich return to action on 29 March, when they entertain St. Pauli in the Bundesliga.
