Bayern beat Gladbach as Müller says goodbye

FC Bayern beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0 to crown their championship celebrations on Saturday. Harry Kane put Bayern in front after the half-hour and Michael Olise rounded off the scoreline in the closing stages. It was a special match for the whole Bayern family, but for Thomas Müller in particular. Before kick-off, the fans produced a tifo to honour the native Bavarian, who made his final appearance at the Allianz Arena on Saturday. Müller left the pitch to thunderous applause when he was subbed off with ten minutes to go.

The Bavarians started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Josip Stanišić, Eric Dier and Raphaël Guerreiro in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Olise, Müller and Kingsley Coman, with Kane up front. Aleksandar Pavlović, Leroy Sané, João Palhinha, Serge Gnabry and Gabriel Vidović replaced Stanišić, Coman, Guerreiro, Müller and Kane in the second half.

Kane opens

Bayern dominated possession, but Neuer was the busier of the keepers at first. The returnee kept out Stefan Lainer’s cross-cum-shot before a Kimmich chip only just evaded Guerreiro at the other end. Neuer made a fine save when a corner bounced off Dier, but Munich upped the pressure now.

Coman fired wide and Kimmich saw an effort from distance saved, but Olise soon sidestepped two defenders and let fly, with Kane deflecting the ball to hand Bayern the lead. Neuer denied Robin Hack, with BMG keeper Jonas Omlin beating Kane to a Müller pass. Kane saw an effort blocked before a Laimer cross evaded the Englishman, and Bayern were one up at half-time.

Olise seals it

Kane had a header saved and Neuer denied Tim Kleindienst before Guerreiro aimed too high. Dier deflected a Kleindienst shot behind, with Omlin denying Müller. Neuer made another fine save against Rocco Reitz. Sané and Müller saw shots blocked and Omlin saved from Olise.

Müller fired over before Neuer stood out with two strong saves to deny Tomas Čvančara and Kevin Stöger. Vincent Kompany’s men put the game to bed when Sané’s forensic pass invited Olise to double the lead, and Bayern celebrated their 34th championship title with their fans.

The result means Bayern have 79 points from 33 matches. The Bavarians will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to face Hoffenheim in the last match of the season.
