Bayern maintain winning start against Augsburg

FC Bayern beat Augsburg 3-2 on Saturday evening to make it two wins from two in the Bundesliga. Serge Gnabry and Luis Díaz netted for Bayern in the first half and Michael Olise made it three after the restart. Kristijan Jakić and Mert Kömür then netted for Augsburg, but Bayern saw out the game to claim three points.

Munich started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Josip Stanišić in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Olise, Serge Gnabry and Díaz, with Kane up front. Sacha Boey, Aleksandar Pavlović and Raphaël Guerreiro took over from Laimer, Goretzka and Gnabry in the second half.

Two up at half-time

Bayern dominated possession and had their first chance seconds into the match, Olise squaring to Díaz, who miscued in front of an open goal. Olise soon tried to roll the ball into the empty net after a poor clearance by Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, who only just managed to prevent the opener. Marius Wolf hit the side-netting at the other end before things calmed down.

Munich took the lead before the half-hour mark when Kane’s pin-point cross invited Gnabry to head home. An Olise effort was parried and Stanišić fired over, but Olise later teed up Laimer, who cut back for Díaz to double the lead on the stroke of half-time.

A nervous finish

Dahmen denied Goretzka after the restart, but Bayern made it three when Kane set up Olise, who sidestepped a defender and beat Dahmen. Kane’s astute backheel soon found Laimer, who saw his effort saved. Augsburg pulled one back when Elias Saad managed to hold onto the ball in the box, with Jakić making the most of it.

Dahmen blocked against Olise and Díaz fired over at the other end. Things got exciting again when Jakić set up Kömür, who found the net with the help of a slight deflection. Olise saw an effort blocked, with Boey firing the rebound over. Dahmen beat Olise to a long ball and made a fine save with his feet against Upamecano, before Kömür headed wide at the other end. Despite 13 additional minutes, Bayern saw it over the line to remain top in the nascent Bundesliga table.

A number of FCB players will be on national team duty during the international break before Munich return to action on 13 September, when they entertain Hamburg in the Bundesliga.
