FC Bayern fell 2-1 to FC Augsburg on Saturday. Hiroki Ito handed Bayern the lead midway through the first half, but Augsburg upped the ante after half-time. Arthur Chaves levelled the scores before Han-Noah Massengo found the net as Bayern’s unbeaten Bundesliga run came to an end.
Bayern started with Jonas Urbig in goal and Alphonso Davies, Jonathan Tah, Minjae Kim and Ito in defence. Leon Goretzka and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Michael Olise, Lennart Karl and Luis Díaz, with Harry Kane up front. Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Tom Bischof, Nicolas Jackson and Felipe Chávez took over from Davies, Karl, Ito, Goretzka and Kim in the second half.
Ito opens
The pattern was soon established with Bayern in the driving seat and Augsburg looking to strike on the break. Alexis Claude-Maurice fired wide before Díaz saw a shot blocked at the other end, but Munich took the lead when Ito rose highest to head home from Olise’s corner.
Díaz put a volley wide and saw another effort saved. Massengo dragged a shot wide and Pavlović tested FCA keeper Finn Dahmen. A Kane effort was deflected behind before Robin Fellhauer hit the bar, and Bayern were one up at the break.
Augsburg turn the tide
Augsburg went looking for an equaliser after the restart, with Urbig denying Claude-Maurice and Anton Kade before Elvis Rexhbecaj blasted wide. The away side were dominant now and Urbig saved from Rexhbecaj, but Chaves soon headed in to level the scores.
Kane put a free-kick just wide before Dahmen beat the Englishman to Kimmich’s chip. Augsburg took the lead when Dimitrios Giannoulis raced to the byline and cut back for Massengo to slot in. Claude-Maurice fired wide from distance before Bayern upped the pressure in the closing stages. Dahmen denied Bischof and Olise had a shot blocked before the former unleashed a curler that crashed off the post, but another goal refused to come as Bayern suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season.
The result means Bayern top the table on 50 points from 19 matches. The Bavarians will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
